I inherited a 5' Walco Whistler and a number of rocky patches of ground in need of mowing. All has gone well with the poor brute up until my second hour of mowing today. I had just turned into a heavy growth of orchard grass (about as high as my head on the tractor) and the mower started making a grating sound I hadn't heard before.

At the house I noticed that the gearbox was warm to touch. I undid the side screw to check the oil and faced a deluge of greenish oil/water emulsion under quite a bit of pressure.

That gushed away for awhile, so after it had finished I added what gear oil I had in partly-empty containers and ran the Whistler up again. The noise had gone within a few revolutions.

By my tach on the tractor I have run the Whistler 21.6 hours in the last week. But it rained three inches last night. This is the first whimper from the gearbox since it flipped its nut last summer.

It rained three inches last night. Water must have gotten in. Is the bearing likely shot, or do I just need to keep the mower inside?

Does it spin freely? Any play inthe output or input shaft? And weeping seals?

If yes to spinning freely.. and no to the rest.. then i would drain the gear box.. rinse with diesel or kero.. then refill with good thick gear oil.. like 140.. or if you can't find that.. hit it with 90w.. or 80w90, and put a few shots of grease gun grease in...

You may have got lucky..

I've run it for about an hour of heavy use since changing the oil twice with 140. It howls a bit now, but works o.k. The disconcerting thing is that when it is winding down there is a distinct clicking of some bearing on every revolution.

I'm pretty sure it is not a blade tip hitting the case. (A favourite rock in the barnyard helps me straighten the case whenever that starts. I just drop the front of the hog over the rock and back up gently. The problem bends out of the way.)

I don't know whether to look at a rebuilt drive, run it until it falls apart, or shop for a new one.

The high speed howl is probably a bad bearing, or worn race.. most likely rusted or pitted from the water. ( could be a pitted gear though... )

You can tear down now.. repalce bearings and seals.. or wait till it goes out.. then repalce bearings and seals..

Just keep an eye on it every cut.. and when it gets worse.. open it up.

Since it is worn, I'd open the fill and drain plug, and grab my grease gun and shoot 1/4 tube of grease in there.. let the excess oil dribble out. Then close up and spin it over by hand. The grease and oil mix will make a nice sticky lube and cushion those howling gears and bearings a bit. Don't put in too much grease.. or let too much oil comes out.. you want a sticky slush.. so just 'eyeball' it.

There's some backlash when I turn the pto shaft, but I don't notice any other play.

I'll try flushing the gearbox before refilling it. I have an oil extractor from my boating days which should work.
