NH 311 Needle Safety Latch Adjustment

It has not been a good day. But lets just say I have two brand new twine needles on my baler now. (Failure to reset needle yoke after fixing a sheer bolt and by-passing latch. Nuff said.)

NH service tech came out and replaced the needles and retimed the knotters.

New issue: Breaking sheer bolts at random, but extremely frequent times. Once every three to ten bales. I believe this is related to the needle safety latch being out of adjustment.

The sheer bolt is only breaking when the knotter trips and literally as soon as it releases *any* tention on the safety latch cable. This makes me think that the latch is engaging too soon. However, its not doing it every single bale so its rather confusing.

I am open to suggestions here. Again, the knotters are in time.

Had the same problem with my 311 this year(minus buying a set of needles). Would randomally break shear pins right after the knotters tied. I suspected the cable from the needels to the safety latch may have streached a little so I adjusted the turnbuckle just a little. Also found a greese zerk on the pin that the safety latch pivots on that I never knew was under there so I gave that a little greese. No problems after that.

I had a similar problem with my 270. A very small - tiny - adjustment to the safety latch arm - back by the needles - cured it.

Not saying that will help you out or is the right thing to do. But after 10 shear bolts, I had to do something out in the field a couple years ago.... Do too much & of course you lose the protection of the latch, and yet another set of needles...

I had a similar problem with my 270 where the plunger would make contact with the safety latch when knotting, but only enough where it would make a "bang" at the end of the tying cycle, but not enough to stop the plunger or shear the shearbolt.

I checked and rechecked the timing and latch adjustments which were all within spec., but what finally cured it was setting the knotter timing a tad earlier, so the needles and latch would be "home" by the time the plunger came back around.

It bales like a dream now and will hog through big windrows better than our JD 336, which is pretty impressive for such a little baler.

As Paul stated, a very small adjustment can make quite a difference with the latch on the 270, the 311 may be as touchy. Just be sure it is adjusted properly to avoid an encore performance!

Good luck,
Scott

PS:

Check the knotter brake as well. They sometimes get greasy and will allow the knotters to slip from their "home" position, thus engaging the safety latch and breaking the shearbolt.

I bought my 311 brand new in 1988. The only problem I've had was once the chain on the outside kept coming off. After the 4th time, I oiled it really well and it stop. It would typically break about 7 bales per 1000. I bought a 5 gallon bucket of amsoil high temp grease and started using it only the baler. The only time it will break a bale is if you get a wet clump or where you tie the bundles of twine together.
