Okay gurus. I either gotta cough up about half the price of the old New Holland baler for new curve leaf springs and backing plates ( $400-$600) or look at another baler. Found a Heston 5500 gonna go look at tomorrow and don"t know a thing about them. Guess just look for good belts, hear it run, etc. $1000.00 for the baler and it"s supposed to be ready to go. 1-2 weeks for parts for the New Holland chainer. I know decisions, decisions. If it was easy, women and kids would be doing it right? Anybody have a Hesston that would like to comment? Thanks, Harley

Hi Harley, my Uncle had a 5540 for years and pulled it with a 574,684 then a 72 HP off brand the worst thing about it was it takes a heck of a HYD system to open the tail gate my 460 wouldn't all the way. I know a guy at Rolla that had the same trouble with a 5500 and a WD45, he made a bale just fine, but couldn't open the tailgate.

I have a Hesston 5500, like it a lot. I paid $2200 for mine, but it was a one owner baler, kept in the shed, and it'd just had every bearing and hydraulic hose on it replaced the year before. Makes good bales for what it costs. Mine seems to like real dry hay the best, if the hay is a little tough it likes to plug, but if it is dry you can move along pretty good. Only question I have is about your tractor, you said it is an M? I presume a Farmall M? I don't think that'd be enough tractor. I have pulled mine with my 42 hp diesel Kubota, and on a cooler day it'll do it, but when it is 95 out she runs a little warm. I now run it with my Oliver 1955 that dyno'd 130 pto hp, and now I can go like hell.

Also, I should add that I am not baling 1,000 bales a year. I maybe bale 150-200 bales to feed to my horses and a couple cows. If a guy was wanting to bale thousands of bales a year he'd need something newer and faster.

Don't know about a 5500, but I had a 5545 (4x6) round baler about 10 or 12 years ago. It was a good decent baler. Was open throat and belts held up well. The only down side was it went thru a lot of bearings, got to the point I always kept certain ones on hand because you never knew when they would go out. But it made a good bale and had electric tie that worked well. Kept it for 7 years and finally bit the bullet and bought a JD 435. WHOA! Thought I had died and went to heaven. So much better baler! In 7 years never replaced a single bearing or had any trouble and makes a great bale. The Hesston will do for now, but be on the lookout for a JD. They really are that much better.

Thanks guy, but down here in the Ozarks, and baling 300-400 bales a year for the girls, I think a big ole Deere is a ways off yet. Besides I don"t think the M would like that much of a workout. Harley
