bush hog project

has anyone built a bush hog type cutter from the ground up? i have a old bush hog brand cutter(5 ft) and the deck is totally rotted out and was thinking it might be best to rebuild it complely. new framework and decking and use the old gearbox and tail wheel assy. i was hoping the cost would be about 1/2 or less than a new cutter. i have the area to work inside and the tools (welder, torch, etc) and plenty of time to fool with it. i'm looking for any ideas or suggestions that anyone might have about this type project. the old bush hog also has a bent frame so that's another reason i don't want to just rebuild it.

I"ve done that a couple of times and have a big project setting here now.

I"ve had to put new skirts and rebuild the support arms on one about 10 years ago. Then about 2 years ago my uncle tore it up again only this time the deck also had rotted away so I"ve got the gearbox and supports that I have to build a bush hog around.

I loaned him a bush hog I had and he managed to tear the sides off it. Rebuilt the sides and it looks better than it has in years.

Now if I can just get time to build that one from parts. :) :)

I have a bushhog project going also. I have a good 6" Gehl/Brillion cutter with a sheared off gearbox. I finally found and bought another gearbox off of a 5" Howse, but upon attempted installation, found that the output shaft of the new gearbox was too short. The frame on the Gehl is below the deck, while on the Howse the frame is above the deck, thus the output shaft is shorter. &#$%!. Very Frustrating.

You think like I do. The idea should work, but you might want to check the cost of new steel before making any decisions. You might also find that the bent frame is easily straightened once the old sheet metal is out of the way.
