I have an Oliver 520 baler that I started using this year that worked great the first couple of fields. The other day I began to bale my next field and heard a boom. Went back and checked and it seems that the twine fingers were in the fully engaged position with twine from the knotters preventing them from returning to the home position. In the process, it appears that the it binded with the right hand knotter and caused the the billhook to not complete its cycle and the knotter shear pin sheared. Upon further inspection, it looks like the return spring on the twine finger linkage looks a bit streched and may be a little weak.

My question is: how strong of a spring or how quick should the fingers return to their home position and is there any other reason why the twine would be behind the fingers preventing them from returing back to there home position?

The twine fingers are supposed to be forward far enough to just about touch the needles as they come up. If yours are back a long ways, string could have gotten behind them. Something could have damaged the spring and prevented them from pulling back. That is a fairly large spring. There should be no delay in them returning to home position.
