SO....

I finally got my 494A back together and operational, and actually planted some corn with it. The first batch went pretty well once I got the ground speed sorted out (well, the markers continue to be fussy, but I will prevail there too), but when I planted the second batch it seemed like the reccomended seed plate wouldn"t feed well.

I"ve read about manually sizing the seed to the plate, but to be honest I can"t make heads or tails of what I"m looking for - the "correct" plate for the first batch (that worked) was a plate I would never have picked by comparing the seed to the cell size - the seed was much smaller than the cell, and even though the seed was mostly "square" in shape, the cells were round.

I"m hoping one of you guys has some experience with this and can give me some guidlines on what I"m looking for in terms of matching things up. I have about a dozen sets of plates so I should be able to come up with something thats close.

I figure for next year I"ll get an old seed hopper at the junkyard, and make a "test stand" to try different plates with different seeds BEFORE I load all 4 bins and lay down 20-30 feet of rows...

Thanks

Gregg

Sweet corn.

The plates I used were what was specified on the seed bag.

I did manage to get everything planted last night by switching back to the first plate (which worked for the first type of corn) and it seemed to work OK for everything else. I'm sure my spacing mat not be "precision" but at least I got the seed into the ground...

My confusion is mostly about manually sizing seed to plates. The sizes of the cut-outs in the seed plates are so similar that I'm not sure what constitutes a good fit, and what doesn't.

I will say that with a decent plate match for the corn, and the Deere pumpkin plates, this old planter does a wonderful job when its working well - I can see why they made and sold about a billion of them....

Also there were both flat drop and edge drop plates. The flat drop required a spacer ring. Hickory King Corn, as an example used a flat drop and the spacer. Most silo varities used edge drop, 1979-A was the most common for IH planters.

Howdy, most seed bags should state which plates to use ( although ussually only IH and JD), if not inquire where ya got the seed from. I am new to this too, I always set the planter down on my gravel driveway or an area with very little grass and "plant" for about 10 feet. Then I check the seed spacing. What is you population target/ acre?
