Small square bale size

What is the ideal length for a small square bale? Mine seem a little long and I see a variety at the sale barn when I sell. I know weight is a factor but is there a standard length to shoot for?

It has been years since we baled but when we got our first baler it had 3 length settings avaible @ 30", 36", & 42" amd was factory set at the 36" length and we used that for several years, then changed it to 30" for easier handling and it actually stacked easier, (Baler was a New Holland 66). Later we got a IHC 46 with thrower and kept it at 30", (Would not bust bales as quick the shorter they are). I curently have setting here a New Holland S66 that I need to repair and am planing on trying to get my small acreage to alfalfa and if I do I plan on setting it at the 24" setting for easier handling (Bad back and 62 years old)

On our 8ft. wide haywagons, they overhang about 4-6" on either side, 3 wide. I guess that makes them about 3ft. long.

I agree with KEH if you are baling 14" tall by 18" wide bales I would adjust the baler to make 36" long bales. If the windrows are not consistent some will be a little longer. It makes for easier stacking and a shorter bale is typically tighter and easier to handle.

Twice as long as the bale is wide so you can stack them interlocked together.

John,
Your gonna get a lot of answers on this one!!
I'd say most are around 36" long. I make mine a little shorter so all the horse girls can feed their horsies without daddy having to come out to the barn and drag around a 60-80# bale. I make mine about 40# and 28 - 30" It works well for my market because the young ladies can handle that weight and it still stacks OK. Of course the price has to follow suit with the bale weight!!
