I got to play with the new haybine today, the Hesston 1014+2. We bought all new parts from sickleservice.com, including the guards, clips, and the sickle itself, and it cuts GREAT!! It took a little while for it to shine up so the crop would flow, but after it did it would really take on a lot of alfalfa, being a 14' cut and all. Now we just hope it dires out by next friday so we can bale it all off....

Nice looking rows of Alfalfa. Do you turn it over or just let it sit in the row? Just curious because I am cutting my alfalfa mix today and wondering when it about the right time to bale it up. This is our first time doing it. Weather here in SD is sunny and 90 degrees slight breeze today and low humidity. How dry does it have to be, how can you tell? Thanks

We're not gonna get away from turning it with this machine, it's a 14' cut and the crimper is only about 4-5' wide... Not the best for getting it to dry down. I should have used our 9' New Idea haybine, but we just got this one and I rebuilt it so I was a little eager to use it. As far as your hay, I can't say because that's a much different climate than we have. Most people seem to rake it atleast once, but we have done it where we didn't have to rake it at all once or twice with a 9' haybine, full width crimper rolls. in 90 deg. and low humidity, it'll be ready in 2 1/2-3 days. You can tell by grabbing a smaller hand full, grab it with your fists, thumb to thumb (straight in front, hands touching. If it breaks off in 3 gyrations of the hands it's ready. We've always gone more by feel but this way works too. If it is damp at all on the bottom, it's too wet yet. It ussually works to rake in the morning, let the sun hit it and if you've got more than 20-25 acres, you can start baling almost as soon as you're done raking. and have everything else lined up and ready to go.

Total investment so far:
Hesston Haybine- $600
Sickle rebuild kit- $565
(1) 11L-15 Implement tire & tube- $68

It came with car tires on it, we had one 11L around as a spare so that went on last night when one of the car tires went flat while cutting. Today I dropped off another rim to have a new 11L-15 mounted. So far not a bad price and it works great.

Don looks like that new to you mower is doing its job.

Hows the haying going?

Had a few drizzly days here to slow things down.

Didn't amount to much rain though.

So far I guess it's going pretty good. We plan to start baling on Friday, Tuesday/Wednesday have a slight chance for rain but we're hoping it doesn't. The hay looked very nice, would have been better if we could have cut it 2 weeks ago before the wind really took it down, but we can deal with it.

I only plugged it twice because i was driving to fast for the conditions and it wasn't shined up yet. That was in the first feild in the first 1/2, then every thing went good untill i got a flat tire on the Hesston. Made a call to my dad and I was cutting again in about a 1/2 hour.

Donovan,

we are keeping an eye on that system that is coming across Tuesday and Wednesday, I got a barn load of hay down right now and cool cloudy conditions. Let me know what you guys get for precip as that system comes accross.

Thanks, Ray

They're calling for a slight possiblity of light scattered showers, so it'll probably be a 2 hour down-pour that soaks it completely through. Where are you at? Michigan?
