Question:

A relative has a 9 foot Lely 3ph disc mower. Unlike the 7 ft 10 in models, the 9ft has a strut going from the curtain support to the cutter bar to reinforce the mower. In tall, thick hay some of the hay will catch on the strut and he has to stop and clean it off by hand. Is there an attachment to prevent this? Disc mower was made up from two mowers. Do other makes with this support strut have this problem? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, that's common to most any mowers with that end support. It was a particular problem in heavy tangled crops. Both of the PZ and Kuhn mowers I have, have had this problem. The newer style Kuhn's have eliminated the support, and I think the wrapping problem.

Our New Idea 5409 mower has a support like that and it will drag once in a great while but the hay will usually fall off when you raise the mower. Our Case IH MDX-91 mower doesn't have an end support and it will mow through anything without plugging.

Do you have a Optimo or Splendimo series mower? There are 3 different ways to go. You can used a Vermeer, Haymaxx or Lely end support.

Make sure that the swather board is working properly and not bent up. That is mainly to clear a way for the gear box, but might help the other problem also. Also try not to run the end in prevously cut hay.
