Hi guys...can anyone tell me what the going price for round bales is these days? I have about 3 acres of excellent grass hay that someone is intersted in buying. He said he would cut it, and hire the bailing done for him. He also said that the person who bales for him charges him 45.00 a round bale. Where would that leave me? Thanks in advance...Randy

Thanks again for the comments. Yeah, he said 45.00...I kid you not...but he did stop short of saying anything more after that. I'll press the guy on that. He (Ken is his name) is the one ill-equipped (no bailer of his own) to handle this as economically as it could be. Would settling on 15-20 dollars a round bale be out of line at this time??

Randy; no settling in that range would be pretty close and you don't have to do anything. Just make sure they get the bales off the ground so it doesn't smother out the next growth. You can't beleive how some guys do this.

If he does all the work you should get somewhere around half what the baled hay is worth. grass hay might be worth $30 a bale, then he would pay you $15. I don't know where he got his $45 figure. That is way out of line. Hay could be bought all over for $40 a ton last year.

Large round bales in SW Michigan delieverd to your farm go any where from $35-$50. I think for you're situation you should be thinking land rent instead. If the person that is inquireing about you're ground uses his own equipment and you have no other investment (other than taxes) that's the way to go. $90 bucks an acre per year it normal in SW Michigan.

Friend of mine has 250 head of cattle. He bought grass hay last year delivered for $17 a bale. He and I know that's a bargain. The fellow has to bring it about 6 miles. He bought several hundred bales, not quite sure of the quantity.

I have 30 acres of fescue and I am again trying to give it to someone to just get it off the field. I've recently bought 50 acres of pasture land adjacent and am in the process of repairing fences, and gathering equipment and plan on getting some cattle in the next year or so, so hopefully this will sort itself.

Rick L. Thanks for the replies everybody. All I know is that he is an IBM'er with his 5-10 acre ranchette, and he raises a few cattle, and must outsource his hay. He owns his own haybine or equivalent so he said he wanted to cut the grass himself. He does not posess a bailer of any kind so he hires a guy to do that for him. He said that he was charged 45.00 per round last year, and that is all I know. I have only had a 15 minute phone conversation with him...never met him yet. He is going to come over to inspect the "product" and if it meets his standards we'll go from there. I'll try to keep you updated. Thanks all...Randy

Randy; One of you are still confused yet looks like. If he paid $45.00 to have it round baled send him my way!!!!! ha ha. Thats what it should have cost him to buy the bales and come get them. If he paid that to just have them rolled the guy with the baler was really smiling all the way to the bank then. My suggestion to you is you get half period or rent it cash baseis per acre. Example if he gets 40 bales off of it you should get 20 bales to sell or you or the value 800.00 for example. Do you have anything to handle them with if not then just let him have it all and take yoru half of the money. WHAT EVER YOU DO GET IT IN WRITING AND SIGNED BY ALL PARTIES INVOLVED. Lets just say been there done that! Bale value in my area $35.00 to 55.00

not quite following you here,fellow charge him $45.00 to bale it for him or is he reselling it to him? In my area having it rolled and net wrapped is 10.00 a bale. the selling price per bale is anywhere from $30.00 to 50.00 per bale in the field. let me know what you are exactly saying here and who is mowing raking etc.

First I am no expert...

I had 5 acres of Alfalfa with a lot of volunteer wheat. It looked like a wheat field.

The guy i had take off the cleanup cut said he had $15 per bale in equipment charge so the most he could give me was $10 per bale. I took it as I just needed it off the field.

He got 16 bales, probably 1500lb bales, these things are as big as a truck... Most likely not a bad deal for him. I think I got screwed, but, in the end I got some money for getting my trash off the field so I can't be too upset...

I personally wouldn't take less than $10 unless you just want it off the field(as I did). Doesn't matter who bales, when they pay by the bale they will make them as big as their equipment will allow.

I originally thought I would have him do all my first cutting next year as my moco struggles with 1st cutting. I've since changed my mind.

If you have a way to do it, sell by the ton.... Then it doesn't matter...

$15 a bale is what I figure I have into a bale as well when I make it, (cut rake bale and haul home) Here in MN, I think long and hard before paying for any hay ground, and if I do, $5 per bale is the most I have ever paid. I think you got a good deal! Course, it may be a location thing. Here, I turn people away all summer who just want there fields cleaned up. No charge to me, just take the hay. I don't have the time to do any more than I do already.
