I know this is a lame question but could someone please help me- in my New Holland manual for my 273 baler they speak of too much/little material on the left or right side of the bale.
Left or right relating to what? Is it as I am looking up the chamber from the rear of the baler or looking from the front?
Looking from the rear I have too little material on the left side of the bale- any hints?
thanks
tom

right and left is always determine standing behind it looking forward,or (always look in direction of travel) at least 95% time

You are right - my dad was the 5%. He always said left or right based on where he was looking at the time.

Drove me nutz.

Yea; what also gets really confusing doing the large planters in transport positon and always maintain correct rotation at both ends when you always facing them assembling. that one end always seems backward but no you just got turn yourself around and face the end of the hitch. Simple to solve but those litte things like that can rreally get you worked uop some times. Bidirectional tractors another good one. As a joke one time in shop buddy taped a L and a R on my arms. thats was good for days laughing in the shop. Also when you do square dancing thats another time when that can really get confused.

Actually the 273 has what are called stops along the sides of the bale chamber. They are what keeps the bale from looking all crooked. and not flkat. it takes 3 per side. The first set of forks that put the hay in the chamber are bent almost sraight down. they push hay in but the stops are what makes the bales straingt.

I run john deere balers but i would think New holland should be similar. There is a "feeder fork" that pulls hay into the bale chamber. this feeder fork can be adjusted to pull the hay futher into the chamber or not so far. adjust so the bale is as square as posssible. this adjustment should be covered in the manual. once you've made the adjustment it's a good idea to run the baler a few strokes by hand to make sure the feeder fork doesn't contact the plunger. another cause for these "banana bales" is not keeping the baler full. increase windrow size or increase ground speed will help alot.

That would be with you standing behind the baler and facing it. The left side of the baler is the same as the left side of your tractor, or car, or truck.

Too bad balers don't have a "driver's" side or a "passenger" side!!!

Illinois boy,

Actually we had a McCormick Deering Baler that did indeed have passinger seats. One on each of the bale chamber. The passenger on the driver"s side would feed the wires (3) through the left side, and the passenger on the passenger side would tie them off. Either of them, but usually the driver side passenger would retrieve the separation boards as they would exit the baler and place them in the ready station to be automatically reinserted in the bale chamber. I"m sure I"m not the only one here who has spent many a hot, dusty day on a manual tie baler.

Sometimes they do- when the knotter isn't working.

JMS; Ok, I think you said once you "walked or rode" along to get the knotter working. If you rode, on what?? If you walked, how big was the field and how hot was it? By the way, I have about 5 acres of grass to cut if all goes right. Come on up and keep the knots tying on the 336. Bob

Hey, Bob- can't seem to jog the memory that much-...first baler I bought, after growing up with the AC Roto-Baler, then 3 years working at home for disabled Dad, 3 years in Army Special Forces, 4 years college, was a JD 14T, in 1972, when I started farming. Aug., 74, bought the NH 268. That one had a bad bill hook, JD/NH dealer mechanic replaced it in September when I first used it after an appendectomy- thank God for bale wagons! Still had bucket milkers then for 28 cows,-app on Friday nite, got home Monday, help went home after Labor Day weekend, Mrs. (city lady) dumped buckets while I changed milkers- by Wednesday I was on my own. Bought a junk 269 to get the three joint pto and longer hitch, had a second bill hook replaced about 1990, sold the baler this spring to a neighbor. Even after we built up the farm to 550 crop acres, and the dairy up to 70 cows with 140 acres in alfalfa- and the bulk of the hay was chopped into silos or round baled, the NH baler was a good backup for whatever small squares we needed. Often tempted to buy a 336 or other JD baler, since they are very good, and have the option of baling on the ground even with the thrower. Both are very good brands with good dealer support.

Heck, its 2006 and we STILL carry with buckets to the cooler. Thank god it's only about 25-30 milking herd, about 50 overall....

Way back when, there actually was a seat on the baler, an operator sat on that seat, and tied the strings by hand. That had to be one of the dirtiest jobs you could ever imagine.

Yeah! and there was 2 seats on some, and a wire tie prior to twine. Tough on fingers. I have seen them at shows and have a friend that had one and got rid of it when the twine tiers came out. Bob

I would suggest making an adjustment to your feeder fingers on the tine bar. Assuming you have 2 adjustable "pairs" of fingers I would start with the left set of tine bar fingers about 3 inches from the left end of the bar. Set the middle pair to center. Move both in the direction the manual suggests a few inches at a time. You will need to experiment. A fat windrow helps.

I added a an extra pair of tine bar fingers (for 3 moveable sets/pairs) and spaced them evenly (10 inches apart). I no longer have feeding problems thin or thick windrow. A set of tine bar fingers is just less than $40.
