OT: Fertilizer after first cutting??

Like a dummy I didn't do any soil sample's this year and didn't fertilize any. First cuttin' was still real good, better than usual actually, but I turned people away in the field. Sold every bale right off the back of the baler.

Question is would it do any good to go ahead spread a little triple 12 over everything to try and get a little more out of the second cutting or would it help any??

Most people here always fertilize early in the spring, but I was talking with the extension agent a couple of years ago and he said I'd be better off to spread it in the fall, after the second cutting. Any suggestions?? Thanks,

Casey

Wondering where you are an what your soil types are. I can almost bet that triple 12 wont be the right blend. My 'summer treatment' is to put 100# ammonium nitrate and 100# of muriate of potash (0-0-60) per acre on my mixed grass and clover hay. Alfalfa mix gets 100# of DAP (18-46-0) and 200# of muriate of potash (0-0-60) per acre after 1st and 3rd cuttings. Then soil test in the fall and add the potash it needs. None of my soils test needing an phosphate, I just like to put a little bit down in alfalfa. Nitrogen, before I went to an all legume system, I'd normally put down 300# ammonium nitrate in March and another 100# first of August.

If you put on N, be careful of using urea if the temperatures are over 65oF because it will volatalize off significantly. Your better off with ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate under hot weather conditions.

I'm in Ky also. I talked to the folks at Sothern States and they told me to put 19-19-19 early on. Seems to work will let ya know later on. The first cutting was good. It was orchard grass.

First cutting of..... ..... .? If it was clear alfalfa, no use in putting N on. It is a big user of potash. If it was grass hay, a mix could be appropriate. We used to apply potash on alfalfa in the spring, another shot after 1 or 2nd (Normally get 3 here). Splitting helped the payment schedule too.

Folk around here like to kick it with a little urea after cutting, but it's been so dry I'm not going to waste the money this year.

Yep - I always put a little N to it - after each cutting. We"ve had some good rain and hay is kicked up and growing. Should get a second cutting by July...

Guess I should have said it was mixed hay, little fescue, little orchard grass, and a little timothy. No clover or any kind of legumes, so I always add some nitogen, usually spread triple 12. Just didn"t know if it"d make a difference in the second cutting or not. Thanks.

Casey,
To each his own - but... I always put a a little N down right after each cutting - not a lot. Just a little bit seems to give the grass a good "kick" and get "er going...
Just watch it so you don"t burn your fields. Been using urea and ammonim sulfate. If the soil test says too much sulfer (which is generally not the case) I throw on some lime. The urea works well when everything is testing par for the course.
