Man, just finished baling first cutting in two of my fields and I feel like I'm wasting fuel. Here in western PA, we had a hot dry beginning of May and this first crop is the thinnest it has been in a while, almost like what second cutting would be. Anyone else having an under par year?

Here in SW New York I've had the best grass year since I started farming in 2000. Silo is almost half full, it's usually bout 1/3 full after 1st cutting, even made some dry hay. Second cutting is looking just as good as first.

What I see here in western Ohio is extra heavy Alfalfa and the only problem is most of it is getting washed as we have had so much rain. Still getting baled or silage. I only have a few acres and wanted to put in a couple acres of corn and the rest soybeans, gave up on corn because of rain and beans that should have been in a month ago still not in because of all the mud and I am not the only one with that problem and yesterday I had a bit less than 1/2" while 30 mile away had about 4", that is in one day

The first cutting on the irrigated ground was 1/2 to 1/3 of the normal crop. We are not cutting any of the non-irrigated stuff. Hopefully the irrigation ditches will run for another week or two so we can get a second cutting. A couple of the less senior ditches have already shut down for the year.

Cows are gonna be cheap. Might be a good chance for a young man to get in. But save your pennys, the bankers never lend money on a down market.

Yes and no.

Clover/grass produce half what it normally does (15 vs 30 b/a). But it was a late cut due to weather and had more stem than blade. The tim mix was almost double (65 vs 35 b/a). It was just about all the 1209 could handle. Cut good, just real slow and the reel litterly would come to a stop in spots. The alfalfa mix was about even at 35 b/a. Seems the orch grass took a big hit producing less. Best part was the weed content was way down. Like almost none, with no spraying. I suspect the cold front that parked over us, followed by a heat wave, in May was the deciding factor. Two weeks in the 40's followed by a week of 90's it just didn't know what to do, grow or seed out. Now if the Sorgum/Sudan hybird would just take off, I might have a good year

Under par?? That is an understatement for us in western South Dakota. There is going to be a lot of hay ground that will not even be hayed. Very little rain and unseasonably HOT temps. Add to that several days of 45 mph winds and things don't look very good.
