I have a IH 46 baler. It is having problems with the twine. I bought this from another guy so I have never used it. We have been feeding in old bales we had to see if it is working right but alot of the time the twine is slipped off the bale on the end. Also on the inner knotter the twine is cut about half way through just after the knot about an inch. I have manually ran it through the cycle and it also looks like the inner knotter is also not cutting the knot all the way. Any ideas? If you need pictures let me know and I can take what ever you need. The manual doesn"t tell alot about it either. Thanks Mark

Everybody is on the right track about the knifes, you need to keep them sharp. I ran into a problem about the twine being cut about 3 from the knot and found that the spring that keeps the twine from coming around the hook on the top of the press had wore to a sharp edge and was cutting the twine while tying. I was able to get these through the dealer for about 6 bucks a piece.

I take mine off every year before I start and use a file on them. They have to be sharp all the time. Concerning your twine coming off of the end of the bale, you have to get a couple of bales in the baler to get pressure on them to make the end of the bales come out right. The first bale if there is no hay in the baler will always need to be rebaled.

Also there is a set of manuals available for a model 46 - worth there weight in gold to own.

Like Delbert says sharpend the twine knives and you may have to adjust them in slightly also.

What can I use to sharpen them with. I have a dremel tool with a bit for sharpening chainsaw blades. Would that work?

The best thing to do is go get new ones. they are very little money for the bother to try and sharpen. probably cost you more in gas than for the knifes. If I had to sharpen them I would hald them with plires and run across emery cloth. My $.02

Thanks for the input guys. Ok now I have bought new knives, it was a whole $2.90. It cuts better not. I just have to adjust the knives in and out and up and down. But the inside twine is still being cut about half way through the twine just afte the knot about an inch. Also that knotter is not working all the time. The knotter is the thing with the 2 finger looking part , correct? Anyway once the cycle for the knotter is tripped and manually turn it all over the knotter starts to turn, its opens up all the way until it get back around and then clicks shut. Sometimes it stay open. The outside knotter is differnt so I assume one knotter is not correct. There is the tension for the knotter that is connected to a arm the goes down by the underside by the knotter. Then when the knotter turns it opens up hitting the that arm and opening the knotter WAY open. The other knotter opens up just as is comes to the arm but goes under the arm instead of above it and that one never stays open after a cycle. I would think the inner knotter is the problem but how do I fix it? Is the knotter bad? Sorry for the vague explaining but I don't know what else to call it all. If you need pictures I can get some. It looks like a job to replace the knotter also.

You may want to take the breasts plate off and see if there is dirt under it. This what the springs with the 3/8 bolts running through them hold on. I have dirt build up under these during the year and would have take them apart to clean now and then.

I think the parts I am referring to as the knotter, is that called a billhook?

Ok I changed out the knifes and it cuts now and it is baling. But it is still cutting the twine on the top twine about 1inch after the knot. The twine is cut about half way through. Any ideas what might be cutting it?

sounds like it is cutting on the floor plate slot for the billhook pulloff, where the next bale pulls the twine by pushing the allready made bale out. The FLOOR PLATE SLOT needs to be grd flat on its face where it has been worn sharp by the twine. Polishing the billhook also helps, 400gr on outerside, not the INNer hook itself, and I"ve used carwax on them.
