Vermeer 504c New Belts Walking

I replaced the 4 inner belts (4 in) on my 504C. The new belts walk back and fourth enough to run into the outer belts and run underneath. This is happening with no hay in baler. I checked the outer belts and they are 1.5 inches shorter. I thought that was the problem and removed the outer belts as a test. The inner belts still walked to the right far enough to run under the outer belts, then walked back over to the left. What would cause the belts to walk? Will the shorter outer belts cause problems?

I appreciate the help. I found that when the turnbuckles on either side were loose the rollers on the spring tension bar where 3/4 inches higher on one side. I was able to loosen the bolts on either side of the bar and even out the roller. I haven"t tried to run again yet, plan to get back on it tomorrow. Could the uneven spring tension rollers cause the belts to walk?

The answer is yes for 504C baler that is 30 years old.

It worked. Was able to bale my 9 acres for the first time. Got 18 bales. I found the bales easier to start in the morning and evening when the dew was on the windrow. Couldn't get one to start midday. Broke the drive chain once fixed with a new master link. I suspect I need a new chain and the idler gear is very worn. I've got time for fix before the next cut. Thanks for your help.

You need to increase your start tension just a little by moving the catch bolt one link. Don't move it 2 links or it will be too tight and will not start a bale. Also the belts need to bale a few bales to wear the factory belt dressing off and they will react differently.
