can round baler belts stretch ???

I have a JD 335 baler and it's getting so when my bale is about full size the belts will slip. The belts look good... I bought them new from Deere 3 years ago. I got thinking maybe they're stretch out and need to be shortend. It just drives me nuts!!!

PJ,the ones that told you JD belts shrink are correct. I doubt unless you baled many 1000's of bales in 3 yrs. that your belts are the problem. What does the rubber look like on drive rollers? Do you know how many bales the baler has made? Are all chains intact on LH side because if one of the two longer ones is broken it will do as you stated. Tx Jim

Maybe but I would look for a bad bearing on one of the rollers.

Absolutely!! 3 years sounds a little too quick to me, but how many bales do you make in a year? I"m not a round baler guy by any means, but they do stretch just like anything else. Donovan from Wisconsin

thats right they srink. also on new holland if belts are sliping they need to be lenghtin it a pain but have done more then my share have a set on a 660 going to have to splice and make longer what i do is buy one new belt then ues it as a pattern and make all the rest match using the worest belt to make the extra length. a lot of fun well maybe not.

Actually, they do not stretch, but shrink. The first time I heard that, I was like....yeah right your full of it. John Deere belts have a number on the back with a build date that goes with that belt. Being from a large round baler area and many years of service with JD round balers, I starteed looking at the belts and numbers, and knowing that the belts had never been altered would read the codes on the belt, then measure the length of the belt. To my surprise they would get shorter over the years. I have several factory reps that confirm this as well.

You could not be any more correct. THE BELTS DO NOT STRETCH. Do the tires on you car stretch? NO! Baler belts have a cross section reinforcement and the filament cords will get smaller with age. If your belts are loose on your baler then you need to re-adjust your start tension. Some balers have springs that load up with chaff between the coils on the spring and lengthens the spring and you have less tension on the belts. Clean out the spring and you will be back to where you round bale should be. If a JD baler is having belt traction problems you either have lots of sappy trash on your drive rollers, uneven belts or your belts need replacing because the rubber on the back of the belt is worn down. Most of the time just cleaning the drive rollers and spraying some belt dressing on the belts will correct the problem. Another reason that a JD baler is having belts slip is all the short belts and all the long belts need to be the same length. There needs to be 6" difference between them hence 525" and 531" on JD 6' tall balers. Uneven belts will cause poorly formed bales because you are not getting the proper readings to the monitor.

I have a massey ferg. 1560 that the belts are so much shorter then the book says, they don't slip yet, but the baler doesn't bale the start of a bale right, it throws the center out at you. and if that goes back in then you can finesh the bale. Dad tells me the bale is also to loose, is the belts what causes it?

Put a 12" or longer splice in your belts and lace them back to factory specs. Then if you are having bale quality issues it is probably the person's fault raking first and then the baler operator last. The bigger the windrow the better the bale. Feed the corners and the middle will take care of itself.
Concerning your baler you may also have some issues with the hydraulic cylinder and the valve. If the baler has not been updated to a closed loop system like the Vermeer H baler you will want to do that for less than $200.
