My NH 489 haybine started smoking yesterday from where the tongue fits into the horseshoe shaped hanger. I know the bottom of the hanger is cracked and needs to be repaired, but I didn't want to do it now. I guess I have no choice now but to fix it. First thing is what is in the tongue there? Bearing? Universal Joint? Second, how do i get the shaft apart to get at this? Third, whats the best way to fix this bracket so this doesn't happen again?

There is a ujoint and a slip clutch. Of course my first guess is the slip clutch, however, if the tongue hanger is cracked or stretched, the tongue could have dropped down allowing the ujoint and pto yokes to start rubbing on the tongue. Either way, you will have more fun fixing the problem then any one man should be allowed to have!! I have serviced those machines since they were introduced in 1979 and I hate them more now then I did back then. Steve

JD,

If it is anything like my 490, the slip clutch sets right behind that pillowblock bearing affair. Perhaps that is what was smokin' and maybe it just needs cinched up a little?

Its not the slip clutch. I could grab the slip clutch, but I could not touch the tongue just in front of it. It does not slow down or act like the clutch is slipping even when I increased ground speed(I did this to check to see if the clutch slips).
