NH 273 twine tightness

I have a 273 bailer which I use sysal twine. I was wondering the correct way to getting super tight bales in grass hay. The super tight string sells better. Should I tighten the twine holder flat spring and the bail tensioner or is there a better way. I don't want to harm anything but am not sure as the manual isn't very clear on this subject. Any info would be appreciated!

Steve-Could you elaborate on the ..... ..... part?Does it mean the bales too tight will harm the knotter? Or do you not like the bales too tight for some other reason?

Sorry, but the proper way is to NOT bale super tight bales. If you do and you have knotter trouble..... .. Steve

I just had to make a comment on NH balers and tightness. We used to have a NH 283, (I think I have the model correct.) 16X18 bales. Had a contract to make 85lb wheat straw bales for feedstores. Used 210lb plastic twine. 22 strokes per bale. Put lots of wedges in it. Had hydraulic tension. Made extra braces to hold the chamber together. Rebuilt the baler every two years. Baled a lot of straw that way! Very good baler. Eventually it broke in half... do to above mentioned severe abuse.

As to your problem. I agree with those who said set the twine tension at the box according to the book.
Set the tension on the bale chamber to where you get the weight you want. Keep the header full. Should make a very nice bale.

As a general rule hay that is of the right moisure content makes a much better bale than hay that is to green.

Crank down on the bale chamber tensioners. Leave the twine tension alone if the baler is tieing correctly. Too much twine tension will lead to broken strings.

u can tightin the twine tinchon in the bell box a lil.. that will make it hold back and put more tinsion on the twin as it feeds out of the box..

Ted,

I also have a NH 273 baler. Unfortunately, I don't know the exact answer to your question, but I know from experience that good windrows make tight bales and poor windrows make loose bales.

I try to rake my grass hay into big enough windrows that the baler makes 6 to 10 plunger cycles per bale. If the windrows are smaller, and the baler makes 15 or more plunger cycles per bale, the bale will not be tight.

I use a Ford 501 sickle bar mower and in my hay, I usually have to rake three swaths into each windrow to get enough hay to operate within the 6 to 10 plunger cycles window.

Bale tension should be what determines how tightly packed the bale is.

On our JD 14T there are a couple cranks on the end of the bale chamber you can crank down for tighter heavier bales...

I haven"t done my grass hay yet this year, but last year I had bales that wanted to bananna because they were loose. I just did a field of orchard grass,alfalfa, and clover mix. I set the twine box tension per the book and then alternated my tension cranks until I got a tight square bale.

May need to experiment a bit.

By "tight" I mean that the bales won't bananna and when picked up the string will pull away from the bale maybe an inch or so.

Bananna bales are usually caused by worn or missing hay dogs, and/or weak springs on the hay dogs.
