I'm not sure I've seen a historical implement to do a similiar job...although since these are designed for no-till operations, that's not surprising.

But thought some of you might enjoy the photos -- the organic community has been working on these for a few years now as a an alternative to mowing or using herbicide to kill a cover crop.

The "consensus" design seems to be going for front-mounting them on tractors so they can crimp & kill a cover crop...while the tractor is simultaneously towing the no-till seeder.
