I have a JD #8W that I have been working on that I use to mow road shoulder with behind my 60. It cuts so-so, but know it could do a better job. Cut result is that it pushes some over and cuts it half way up the piece of grass. not in any one streak but randomly. Cut is not as clean as my grandpa's used to be. Can't mow as fast as he did either. (he used to mow in fourth and I can't really get a good cut in third) The sickle sections and the guard ledger plates look not to be worn too badly. However there is about a 1/16th to 1/8th inch gap between the sickle section and plate on the guard. The hold down clips on top of the sickle don't touch. I painted the sickle bar and it didn't even wear the paint off the sections where the clips are. How tight should the sickle be to the guard plates? how tight should the clips be on top of the sickle?

It looks pretty neat all painted up, now id like to get it to cut as well as it looks. Am I off theory or on the right track?

Also looking for a square baler in ND or NW MN for reasonable. JD 14T. Anybody have one they want to get rid of for small amount of cash?

I agree with all the advise on tightening up the clearance between sections and hold down clips. I'll ask another silly question. What kind of sections do you have? If they are serrated they are self sharpening, but if they are smooth (non serratated)they need to be shaprened. Years ago we used smooth sections on wild hay and a freshly sharpened knife would need sharpening again by mid afternoon. We'd pull the knife and go over it with a file and restore the cutting edge.

I buy after market spring steel clips with a replacable plastic type of wear pad and it keeps the sicle tight to the ledger plates.It made a noticable difference with cleaner cut and less plugging.

Is the wear plate under the hold down clip in good shape? The front edge should have a lip tha is bent down. You can bend down the cast cips as well as the formed steel ones, but you realy need to take the section bar out to bend them down enough. Have you checked the knife register? That is do the cutter bar sections move an equal distance past the gaurds at each end of it's stroke.

I'd say you might be on the right track. From you description of, "Cut result is that it pushes some over and cuts it half way up the piece of grass." and the fact you are mowing a road ditch, makes me think stuff is falling in front of the cutter bar. This might not be the text book answer but I hammer my clamps down so that the sckle is touching the ledger plates on the guards.

Sid,

I just went thru this on my mower and it will slice a sheet of cellophane.

New guards, sickle and hold-downs. Align those guards first and then set the hold-down clearances to .005 to .020".

Thanks for the response, I have these cast hold down clips though, should I change to a malable style clip that I can pound on? The stock new hold down clip on JDparts looks quite different than the cast iron ones I have

Are there any shims under the clips right now? You could try pounding on one because right now they are doing no good.

We just got a kit to rebuild the cutting parts on our 14' Hesston, the new hold down clips have a bolt for pulling them down onto the sickle, instead of going hog-wild with a BFH. We got the kit from sickleservice.com, they're located in Nebraska but for orders $200+ they ship for free.

That's another route to go, sometimes Mother Deere thinks her parts are gold, sometimes she isn't too bad.

I have a piece under the hold down but the sickle is riding on top of that (wear plate?) The hold down is cast and the tip is actually rounded upward and not touching the sickle by about another 16th inch to 8th + the gap between the sickle and the guard. Will the hold downs that JD parts lists for a 37 /38 fit? they look like something you could hammer on? so get them down pretty tight? until touching or .020 like allen said?

As far as I know, The bolt spacing is the same for all the hold-down clips so they should fit. The hold-down clips only have to be every-other guard, so you could put the wear strips on the other guards. Donovan from Wisconsin

On our IH-100 sickle, I replaced the old cast clips with the newer ones to clear the bolts on the sickle sections...at first they were to loose, so I bent them down to far, then they were to tight and made the belt slip.

I bent them back up a bit and now they are just right, I have about a fingernails clearance between the section and the ledger plates....which is more than Alan specified but it works ok for me.

Replaced the hold down clips today. Turns out the mower had some cast clips on from a combine header and they were not ever going to work (mower is new to me) Improved cut greatly. Can I bend indvidual sickle sections downward as well to get tehm to sit better on the ledger? Thanks for the help! I got the mower all painted with the spray can too! I'll try to post pictures sometime.
