Been baleing hay with this baler pulling it with an Oliver Super 88 and twice now the tail gate has opened when a bale was about 1/2-3/4 done. And of course that bale is wasted. So what might be wrong that its opening as I bale. I alway try to make sure its locked down good and double check when I close it back up. Thanks

My JD 530 baler developed a similar problem last week. The BIL was baling and the latch came open. It turned out that an "O" ring in the bale density control valve had failed and was allowing oil pressure to drop. That let the latch open and also sprayed oil all over the front of the baler. It was fortunately a cheap fix, the baler works perfectly now!

Old,

I have had the same problem with my NH chain baler. I found that the latch was not completely engaged once the door closed. If I continue to hold the hydraulic lever for another 30 seconds, I can see the hydraulic rams retract another 1/2 inch or so. This releases all of the tension on the cable that is connected to the latch. When I check the cable tension with the ram completely retracted, the cables are loose. When I check the cable tension with the door closed, but the rams not completely retracted, the cable is still fairly tight. This tight cable I think helps to prevent the latch from staying completely closed. Next time you close your hatch, check that cable tension and if tight, try to retract the ram all the way.
Hope that helps.

Warren

My friend had a similar problem with his 851 several years ago. If I remember right the door would seemd locked and then with about a third of a bale it would start to creep open. I believe he cleaned the hydrailic oil cooler due to the fins being clogged up and maybe even changed fluid and never had anymore problems. I don't know if your tractor has a cooler or not. I'll ask him later today and see if I am remembering right. Fud.

Yes, if you are sure you have it powered down each time it has to be an internal leak either in the tractor valve or the cylinders. But no the bale isn't "wasted" If you want it tied just unroll it and run it through again. third party image

Could there be a problem with the control valve on the tractor?
