A 1996 JD "Hay Preparation" booklet I have on MoCo's, Rakes, etc. also includes info about the 350 and 450 sickle mowers. It says that as the cutterbar breaks away, the sickle stops to help prevent damage. No more description is given. Can someone explain the details of how this works?

Thank you in advance for the information.

It's real simple. There is a brace that runs diagonally back to the inside end of the sickle bar. It is held in position by a heavy spring. If you hit an obstructuion, it will release from the bar and allow it to swing back. As the sickle bar pivots back the tension is released on the drive belt so the blade stops moving. Questions?
