Proper Tedding in Alfalfa

Cut hay until 10pm tonight. When should I ted? Got a new tedder and should I do it first thing in the morning or tomorrow evening???

Field of Thick alfalfa...

It's very interesting hearing how people dry hay from different regions of the country. Here in SW NY state. You can't make legume hay unless you have a dryer in the barn. It also takes a significant amount of tedding to get it to that point. The few guys that mess with making legume hay is to mow with a flail conditioner(wide swath)around 11am, start tedding at 1pm. Ted the next day at 11am and the next day at 11am. Bale the following day at 2pm at about 30% moisture. Use barn dryer or proprionic acid. Usually tests bout 150-175 RFQ.

I would have started tedding as soon as you could get to the field if it was cut with a sickle mower or disc mower. If it was cut with a conditioner I'd wait a day and ted with a heavy dew on.

Do not ted! You need to use an INVERTER. I have used the NH model , and it does an excellant job. It picks up the crop, moves it sideways a couple of feet, and puts it back on the ground, wet side up. It does this very gently. Works well.

If your going to do it I'd do it in the morning. Personally I'm like most of these guys and wouldn't. I've got a tedder and I never use it unless we had rain the night after I cut. Anything after that will be junk if it gets more than a sprinkle.
Tedders have their uses but use sparingly. I have to go along with Rick on this...Good luck however you go..... .

I hate to burst your bubble but I assembled couple those last season and since all I do is baling for a crop the dealer I help said go ahead try one see what it will do. I did and boy thatwas biggest mistake I did. All I did in my eyes was ruin my crop. I had it rolled instead of smalll squared. If you going to do it you don't want to wait very long after cutting thats for sure,but if you go to soon it is still so limp it won't stay up yet anyway. Sorry I know thats not waht you wanted to hear but thats what we learned. On the other hand thou some guys love them. Grass hay should be okay

If your gonna do it, get after it in the morning before the dew gets off. We'd always start tedding about 4 hrs. or so after we started cutting. Hope ya get'er baled before we get some more liquid sunshine.

I am certainly no expert but in our part of the country nobody touches alfalfa after it goes through the moco until they bale it. Too easy to knock a lot of leaves off. I always thought tedders were for grass hay.
