Sharpening Cutditioner Flails

Does sharpening the flails on a cutditioner help the cut quality much? Ours doesnt give a clean cut at all, but I am guessing that is just the nature of the beast. Anybody ever sharpen the flails and notice a differenc?

I have a NI 272. I sharpen mine after every 30 acres. I have not removed the flails yet to sharpen. Frankly, I am a bit concerned about doing so because some of the flails are hung up and I am concerned that I might not get it all apart or all back together. Either way, my experience is that no matter how sharp you get the blades, the grasses will look a little ragged.

FYI, I absolutely love my Cut/ditioner. Downed hay no problem. Clogging - not a problem. Wood chuck holes - no big wreck. Unit is tough as nails and simple to maintain. I will not set any speed records mowing hay, but I sure might set some drying hay.

I usually sharpen my cutditioner flails before first cut and before second cut (depending on how many rocks, etc I hit).

I thought i was one of the only ones to still use a cutditioner. Yeah sharpening makes a big difference. i take them off and sharpen them. I shoudl do it more often but i only do it once a year unless i break some.

You are talking about the flail knives right? I sharpen mine all the time. Two ways I do it is out in the field with a cordless angle grinder. I hold the tip of the knife with a vice grip and then sharpen the beveld edge and grind out the knicks. I also take them off and sharpen on my belt sander when I have more time. If I am mowing for a full day then I will sharpen in the field and I also always carry extra knives to replace ones that are too bent up. Sharpening makes a huge difference after about 40 acres.

I am refering to the New Idea Cutditioners that use a bunch of flails on a drum. They are from the 1970's or so.
