I own a 1994 Ford that has an absorbing hitch built into the rear bumper. This was used by the prior owner for pulling hopper wagon. It bolts to the frame. Can anyone tell me what kind of hitch this may be and how much weight it would hold. I tow a car trailer hauling 7000lb. tractors and also a livestock trailer. I just need to know if this hitch will hold up to this tongue weight or if it is just made for hopper wagons where there is no tongue weight? Thanks!

Mike

If it looks like this one it would be a DMI, they also made one with a drop center bumper that had the same drawbar but the handles for the swing/extend features were a little different. If it's a DMI I'm pretty sure they were rated at 2,000lbs tongue weight and the trailer weight was whatever your truck can pull. I've got this one mounted on a 2 1/2 ton truck so you don't need to worry about breaking one on a pickup.

What kind of shock hitch.Springs? IF it has two big springs under the bed, chances are it is a DMI hitch.

The hitch should be rated for both maximun load and also tongue weight. And then another consideration is the bumper itself. I always insist on a 10,000 lb bumper with 1,000 tongue weight. But yeah, they pull farm equipment all the time with those hitches and so they are surely made to stand quite a bit of tongue weight.
