New Holland 282 bale size

Anyone use a NH 282 with 62 thrower? I bought one this spring in good shape and took it out to try on some kind of wet alfalfa, but it makes bales so heavy the thrower burns the strings off. My other baler, (NH 269 with 54A thrower) worked fine. Does the 282 just make a monster of a bale? They were 80-90 lbs, and not even tight. I'm thinkin in straw or dry grass hay it would work well. I sell all my hay and want 40 lb bales that will stack and haul well. Any ideas?

Illonoise boy, is okay! It is very difficult to tell what your baler is going to do in wet hay for a couple reasons. 1)the bale is probably to heavy for your kicker. 2)after the kicker belts get wet you really have a hard time getting a bale though it. Wet hay doesn't make a good bale simply because its wet.
Finally I don't think your going to have a lot of luck getting 40 lb bales with that baler. Check to manual and adjust the bale length down and see if you can get the weight you want. You will probably need a 50-55 lb bale if you bale at 18% moisture to get the bale you want. Good luck..... ..

Thanks for the advice. I kind of figured that it wasn't going to make light bales, especially in wet hay, and the bales were so heavy I couldn't see how the thrower would throw them. I'm hoping in dry grass hay and straw it will work out better. I also wondered if those balers were really meant for throwers. It seems to me that those big bales would work much better in an accumulator or bale wagon.

For me an accumlator is the way to go because thats what I'm set up for. In parts of the country where hay is stored outside I suppose the bale wagon works best. I have a bale wagon and it still requires a lot of handling of bales if you store in a barn but they will sure get them off the field in a hurry.....

I have a 282 baler that will bale anything but won't make smaller lighter bales. Bale cross section is the larger 16x18. At 60 plus I can't handle those heavy bales anymore. I use an old NH 67 for hay that I don't put in round bales. The 282 with 7200 plastic twine makes great wheat straw bales.
