Hi all , I'm still alive ! After yesterday which started out bad and then got worse . A rundown - I let one of the dogs in to the mudroom to feed her and let her cool off some and sort of forgot that there were kittens out there in a open transport kennel - there were 3 - now there's 1 , then I got the M and the baler out to the field to finish baling , started the baler and before I even got to the windrow I ran out of gas , I jumped in the pickup and ran to the Kwik Star about 6 miles away and realized I left my wallet and all my money at the house , but here was the one lucky spot in the whole day , I had a check in an old checkbook in the visor so I got the gas , put the gas in the tractor and the float stuck on the carb so I drained about a quart out into the hayfield before I could beat the carb into submission . Got the tractor running and started the baler again , eased into the windrow and heard the knotters click just like alway's and then at the end of that windrow I turned around to see how many bales and there was a nice windrow coming out of the back of the baler ! I found that the shear pin on the needles lift arm sheared before the first bale ! I didn't have a shear pin so I searched for something that would work like a nail but ended up using a hitch pin hairclip because it fit perfectly in the hole , Then rebaled those and stopped baling because I wanted to start picking up the hay because I still had about 70 bales on the ground . By this time I was soaked with sweat and was close to heat stroke , I started to load the rack 4 bales at a time then climbed on and moved them to the upper layers , I got it up to eight high but I didn't follow the pattern that I had started the day before so the load got loose . I got 4 on the rack and took a break , climbed up and moved them up and took a break and then climbed down and took a break move tractor ahead and took a break . No air moving just north of the grove . I got all but 22 bales on before the heat and cramps took over and I called my BIL for some help but they were in MN at Cabela's which is about 1.5 hours from us . In the meantime thunderstorms were popping up just north of me and to the west so off I went in search of the large tarps we had last year . Well they were shot and by the time I got back with them it had poured for about 10 minutes with BIG cold drops . That felt good I was still so hot . The BIL and sister showed up and we got the hay off the rack into the barn but left 13 bales in the field which we went back out and got . Finally got done at 9:00pm . I started late at about 1pm . But I cramped up so bad all over my body from my toes to my back and my hamstrings , I only got about 2.5 hours of sleep only after I got up and drank a half of glass of warm salt water before I had to get up at 4:30 and go to work today .

Looking forward to the next time - There's NO WAY it could be as bad as the last two days ! My wife is usually here to help but had that big horse show in Des Moines and didn't get back till 11 last night . She actually stacks the rack right off the baler . So now I have two 400' windrows of alfalfa mix rotting on the ground . It's supposed to rain tonight again and tomorrow so it's probably a lost cause . I might have to bale it and burn it . I didn't get the fertilizer either because of those windrows . Maybe before the end of the week though . Hope everyone had a much better time at it than I did ! One bad time isn't going to get me down , it was just a typical Monday for me HA-HA . Take care ...Randy

Sounds like the heat is winning. told you it would get old in hurry doing it that way all by yourself. Heat stroke is nothing to mess with,basket wagon is by far cheaper than the medical bill. Good Luck

Hi Rick , Did I disagree with you on the bale basket ? Really , it sounds good but I really can't justify the cost for the small amount of hay I do . If these fields start filling in and producing some hay that might make a difference . But for now I'm not even getting a ton per acre . Just had the fertilizer put on today . 100 lbs nitrogen per acre . That's what the last years soil test called for . I baled what I had left in the field yesterday . I came home from work and spread it out by hand about 11am and baled it about 7pm . My BIL came over again , turns out he loves doing this so I told him to run the M with the baler , he hasn't done that for maybe 40 years now ( He's 61 ) but he didn't forget a thing ! Monday night I taught my sister how to run the Oliver so she can pull the baler next time . So now I know I have help for the next cuttings at least I hope so . I made short bales ( about 24" ) this time . The bales I was making were about 50" long and weighed over 50 lbs apiece . I know they were to short but there were only 53 of them . But the field is done and I'm back to fixing the junk I use to do it . It keeps me out of trouble so that's a plus ! Take care ! ...Randy

Watch that heat, once you get the way you said you were you can never stand the heat that you could before and is easier to become overheated each and every time it happens. Had hear stroke about 35 year ago and now if I am getting close I can tell right now and stop doing what you are doing and start to get cooled off and liquid in you. I can tell if I am starting to get in need of the salt to keep from getting it bad again. The year I got it the family could not get a hold of the Dr. Finally got a hold of the Dr. that was covering for family Dr. but could not see me for 4 or more hours and was heaving all the time, when finally did get to see him was feeling better after it cooled down for the night and told me to drink that salt water, could hardly gag it down, to this day I have found out I need extra amounts of salt in the summer. That same year I had heat stroke both Grandpa and a teanage cousion had heat exaustion on the wagon, mine was in mow. The next year Dad bought a baler with a kicker on and if it was too hot the hay had to stay on the wagons instead of being unloaded. Take care of yourself. Leroy

Hi Steve , Thanks ! I did it as a youngster in Georgia on the grandparents place . The last time was probably when I was about 14 or 15 . Now I'm 49 . Last year was the first time since then . Did close to 400 acres I'm told back then . Baled it all on the ground and then picked it up . It didn't bother me much at that age , all I had to do was throw them on the truck . I remember it as a good time and my gramdma was the best cook in the church ! There was alway's plenty of help and the hay barn only burned down once I was told ! It took a couple of weeks to get it all up though . Now I do 6 acres of my own and am thinking that when I get everything to work at least most of the time I'm going to rent another field . I need about 6 - 10 more acres maybe . I have 5 horses to feed now and my wife has plans for more in the upcoming years . Take care ...Randy

Glad to hear things worked out, if only I could be so lucky. Never got rained on once last year so you know how this year's going to be.
I baled a 5 acre grass/alfalfa/clover 2 weeks ago, had to go to Kansas City to pick up the wife from the airport, had to leave 185 bales on the ground. You guessed it, rains while I'm gone. Got up early the next morning to stook the bales in the field to dry them, it rains again before I can start, at least it didn't rain hard. Once the rain was done I got them stooked and was able to get them all in the barn the next evening, salted them to be safe, but they appear to be fine.
Last Tuesday I decide to mow a small 3 acre alfalfa/orchard field at home, this is my best stand of alfalfa, comes up to the top of my thigh and man is it thick! By the way, I'm 6'1"
Forecast is only calling for 20% chance of a shower on Fri. so I feel safe. With temps in the upper 80's to low 90's and 25 mph winds I'm feeling good. Fri. night we get 1 and 1/2 inches of 20%, no problem it's for my horses so it doesn't have to look the best. Every time it's almost dry we get more rain, my neighbor was going to round bale it today but we got 1/2 inch last night with more forecast for tomorrow.
To make matters worse, the neighbor and I were talking about our baling plans last Monday night, and my wife suggested we wait until this Wednesday, it's kind of hard to look her in the eye right now. She ain't come out and said it yet, and that's almost worse. So far there's no mold, but I don't know how much longer it will last. The neighbor figured there was an easy ton to ton and a half an acre there, losing that would really hurt.
Oh yeah, hey Allan, I just brought home two more horses, that makes eight, time for you to catch up!

Hi Greg , Just starting out too ? The learning curve for me seamed to be flattening out some but then this weekend happened . I had the equipment as ready as I could get it . But the humidity beat me . I guess I ain't as good as I once was ! Don't the forecast's make you mad ! They did a better job of it 20 years ago .

My wife did the same thing . Just told me to wait till this upcoming weekend . But I wanted to cut early for the RFV . Besides I had a 4 day weekend to get it done . My wife isn't as polite as your's is I guess because she has let me know about it since she got back .

If your hay is flat and not windrowed I've been told it'll last a couple weeks if you don't mess with it . I don't know how true that is for alfalfa . I got the couple of windrows baled that got about 1/2 " of rain on them Tuesday and I think I got them spread out in time to not get black mold but they were dusty as I baled them . My wife said she's going to feed it . I thought they dried great yesterday with a nice east wind on them . North and east are the only directions that wind can get into my field and do any good . My wife has 5 horses now and is buying a breeding of a goldstar futurity stallion from a friend at the stable she work's at part-time for about a 10th it's value . That should give us a foal that's worth about 1/2 what we paid for the 13 acres we have . Time will tell as alway's . About 4 years worth . Nothing's worth a darn if you don't get any money for it . Our stallion makes real nice foals but he's a little short short . Easy to handle though . Good luck next time ! ...Randy
