Have the opportunity to look at a Hesston 5500 round baler that's in very good shape and shedded for $1300 OBO. I need a cheap round baler to help me out in case I run out of storage for square bales. What should I look for in a baler like this and what are the good and bad points. Do they make a fairly tight bale? Also what kind of throat do they have? Is it similar to the newer balers? Had an early vermeer 605 B for this purpose but we had too many problems with it. Took forever to get anything done with it and it always plugged at the throat. Will this baler be any better? Thanks. Not very familiar with round balers, sorry for all the questions. Thanks.

The 5500 is a fairly good old roller. I have been running one of these for several years. The only thing I can say is not to crowd it too hard. It will make a nice roll if you give it time to compact the hay. It definetly does not like wet hay. Choke it up pretty easily. Nor does it like such things as wheat, oats. Electric tie is pretty good except for switch. If left mounted on tractor be sure to keep covered with plastic to keep out moisture.

I bought one for $1000 with new belts in it this spring at an auction. It is an open-throat baler according to the manual. I"m about to try it out today. Makes up to 1100 lb. 5x5 bales. Previous owner (who I know) said it didn"t like making wet bales for wrapping, that"s why he bought a newer used Claas and consigned this one.
