Hi All ! I raked this morning and the wind was blowing so hard the hay dryed very fast . I could only rake from west to east so I drove over the field a LOT of times . If I raked from east to west the wind just picked up the hay from the stippers and spread it back out over what I just raked so it was a losing battle . I thought I'd go ahead and try the M for baling , it worked real good but it's not nearly as comfortable as the 1755 . And the learning curve on baling without live power wasn't to bad . Only broke two shear bolts in the tough hay in the corners were I still can't seem to rake it out right , it balls up into huge piles . One of those broken bolts was because I didn't release the brake lock on the tractor . That got 'em hot ! I only baled 10 bales before it broke the second time . But they work better now - go figure ! I baled on the ground because my wife is out of town this weekend at a horse show so I hooked up the rack and started to pick it up but after 10 hours in the sun I got heat sick and hung it up around 8:30 pm and got in a cool shower asap . Man did I feel poorly . I hate heat ! Only got about 60 bales on the rack before the heat got me . I did what the safety police would have a cow over , I put it in 2nd-direct and let it idle along at about 1 mph and got off and put bales on . I'm a heavy equipment operator , I know the risks so no need to flame me , thanks . Kids , don't try this at home , it is dangerous and I only did it for half a single row , about 750ft is all . I'll be back out there tomorrow because I left about 1000ft of windrows on the ground because it wasn't ready , it had a lot of alfalfa in it and I neglected to turn those all afternoon - OOPS ! It'll be ready tomorrow for sure . The baler , except for the shear bolts performed flawlessly . Never missed a bale , but I only baled 115 bales , a much worse harvest than last year . But I expected that . I 'm going to call and try to get them to fertilize on Tuesday . It's supposed to rain on Tuesday too . It was a long day ...Take care ...Randy

We got the first this year's hay up today but we've still got along ways to go. I spent almost six hours on the 560 this afternoon raking and I can tell exactly where I missed with the sunscreen. All of our first crop hay is round baled and we hire the baling done so that helps out alot but we'll have over 150 acres of first crop hay (did over 200 last year) so by the time we get done with first cutting it's usually about time to start second cutting. Luckily the only breakdown we've had so far was a flat tire on one of our rakes but we've got three bar rakes, a wheel rake and a JD twin rake so when one goes down we can just hook onto another to keep going.

Got half of my clover baled late yesterday afternoon. I only cut half of my 5 acre clover field since my work schedule is so unpredictable. My belt deep clover which Randy in Ia would have liked to seen did pretty well I thought. Right now I have 162 bales to put in the barn with 2 outside windrows left to bale yet. They were a little damp yet so I left them for today. I can only imagine how the other half of the field will do since this was the "thin" half. Guess this will help make up for last year as I only got about 60 bales all year with 2 cuttings. The cows will be eating good this winter! Hi , I'm getting a real late start this morning and it's already hotter than it was all day yesterday . It sounds like you're getting the results that I want . I'm going to get at least 100 fewwer bales from this cutting than I did last year , but that was expected since the new seeding didn't get more than 12" tall in the best spots . I probably shouldn't have cut it till July . Let it go to seed and then just chop it down with a rotary cutter and let it rot in the field . But I was getting to many canadian thistle and other prickly type weeds . Another thing on my " gotta spend money " list is get a 40 - 60 gallon pull sprayer . Glad to hear you got your hay up, did you end up catching any rain? I went camping last nite and saw my field is a couple days over mature. I was thinking of mowing today, but tonite, tues., and wed. we have a very good chance of rain, 40-70%. Seeing how it"s allready mature, I might as well mow it down and see if it rains (which it will). Until I bought my Oliver 1650, I baled 2 years with a Farmall H and 14T baler. You have to be careful with the heat and humidity. Last year I baled when it was 98 deg. or more and I had to go back out and pick up the bales off the field and get them delivered that night, I didn"t get done til 12-1 a.m. I better call my dad"s nieghbor and see if his trailer is available to haul hay. Now you can sit back for a minute and look at the hay in the shed.

Hi Rich , Got most of it baled and most is still in the field . Got some on the rack outside the front door . I'll get what I can on the rack in a little while and let the rest lay out there till my wife get's home .

Yep on the rain . It rained half the day Saturday but dried up some in the early afternoon . Yesterday though as you might have experienced down there it was high wind and heat . Hay dried fast were the wind could get to it . The couple of windrows I had to leave in the field are on the north side of my grove and south wind doesn't get in there at all . The other problem with that is that's where the heaviest alfalfa is so it doesn't dry very good . I know I baled some obviously wet hay in that corner yesterday before I stopped on those rows . I'll have to see if they got hot overnight . They are still in the field so I can open them if they are . Once the hay is in the mow I don't ever see it again . I go to the barn maybe once a month because that's my wifes domain not mine . I don't care much for horses since I grew up with them . I know enough about horses to get me in trouble when talking about them because things have changed over the years . I go to some of the show's when I'm made to but it's alway's kicking and screaming the whole way . HA-HA .

The M didn't seem to leak as bad since I took the belly pump out . I know it wasn't the pump leaking because I drained it a long time ago when I found it full of water and when I put oil in it to check it's operation it just puked it all out from somewhere so I drained it back out then . But those bearings in the tranny didn't like the thumping the baler gave them . Boy did they groan ! I got to get that looked at some time . But that's a cold weather project . I'm SO looking fortward to winter already ! Like I keep saying - I HATE HEAT ! I moved up here from St. Louis to get away from it but I didn't go far enough ! I should go on up to northern Mn . or Wi . at least it doesn't stay hot for nearly as long a period here as it does there .

It's supposed to rain next weekend again too . Just not been real good hay making day's . But if they can get out here with the fertilizer tomorrow then maybe my next cutting will do a lot better .

Good luck with the hay . Maybe they'll be wrong about the weather . They seem to be wrong more than they are right these day's compared to 20 years ago . Maybe that's because all they use is " computer models " instead of looking outside . Take care ...Randy

Well, I couldn't hold out any longer, I cut my 5 acres this afternoon. When I was using my old H and unadjusted IH sickle mower, it was taking me a good 6-8 hrs to mow that little chunk of odd shaped land, run in 2nd or 3rd gear, stop every 30 feet to unplug, then mess with the center which has lots of points, that mower sure didn't like that. Now with my 1650 and IH 3pt pitmanless mower, I'm done with that piece plus another 3/4 acre in 2hrs. I'm able to run 4th direct and 4th over in the thinner spots. I've found running faster helps with the points as I now slide under the cut hay, instead of having it all bunch up on the ends.

They're still talking good thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow, but being freshly cut, I don't think alittle rain is gonna hurt it much. My hay goes to horses too. My friend's mom doesn't like my hay as there isn't enough alfalfa for her high performance horses, I found some folks last winter that loved my hay for their backyard pets. I don't have a problem with horses, just not my cup a tea. I met a girl this past week that I really like that said someday she'd like to move BACK out to the country and have a couple horses. I could live with a horse or two. HAHA

Must be nice having a rack or two, I have a 12ft rack that is as useful as my brothers wife. I usually try to borrow a neighbor's 18ft car trailer. Hook it behind my truck, pick the bales up off the ground, deliver when it's loaded, repeat. If I can't get the trailer, one truck load at a time. The most I've had on the truck so far has been 52 bales, could have more, but the toolbox robs me of space.

just my opinion I would have used a rear mount tractor to pull the wagon. I am an Oliver nut but would have used the M on the wagon. Willnot climb aboard a moving tractor in front of the rear tire. No prob climbing a moving tractor from the rear, done that lots

Hi E , I still have the baler on the M because I'm not done with it yet . But I hear ya ! With as tired and wore out as I was at that point yesterday that tire was all I could think about that's why I stopped doing it . Not much bothers me in the way of danger but some things are pretty stupid and me working alone with no neighbors that can see the field and my wife not not going to be home till midnight tonoight it just didn't seem worth it to spend the night and today laying in the field " seriously kilt or injured " as we say at work . Besides if I had been only injured I would have had to watch as my 1755 hit the trees at the end of the field and get itself all dented up ! I'm not doing that anymore . I'm getting to old . I have a piece of alfalfa down but it's 60� yet this morning (4:30) and the wind blew all night. I'd be real surprised if it is tough enough to bale. It's been 100� the last 2 days and blowing a gale, it's gotta be like potato chips. I'll run ove in a few minutes and check. It'l be getting daylight soon.

I'm usaully up at 4:30 - 5 during the week but weekends and time off are mine so I stay up late and get up late . Just the kid in me I guess . Good luck with the hay ! ...Randy

Hi Loren , I use a old Oliver 207 rolla-bar . It has 5 bars . I don't like it much , it leaves to much hay in the field . I'm thinking about putting more teeth on it and see if that helps . It's got room for another tine in between the two tines that are between the stripper bars . I don't know if it could handle the extra weight though . My other option is to speed up the reel in relation to ground speed so it sweeps more per foot traveled . Or both . By the way this is only my second year . Good luck ! ...Randy

Hey Rick. Wish I had one of those too but I'd need a couple that were good for travel on the hiway. I bale 10 miles from the barn. Thought about building a gooseneck on the front of one and using a forecart type of thing while towing in the field maybe. Then dump the forecart and hitch it to the truck.

Hi Rick , If you got one for 100 bucks or so I'll be happy to use it ! I saw two parked behind a shed the other day but I don't remember where . Those are the only ones I've seen around here . If I have to pay more than a couple hundred bucks for something it stay's with the current owner . Except for the tractors I haven't paid more than 500 bucks for anything I use and some of that I've paid way to much for out of ignorance . Like my plow . Live and learn . thats okay but I will let you know picking them up off the ground by yourself and in the heat will get old bye the 3rd or fourth time. Heat stroke also is no fun. If notrhing else why don't you just use a hay sled then would be way easier to load, and the are cheap and you could make couple three of them. I used to help guy that ran them several years ago whe we used hay fork to put them in the barn.

We're planning to bale tomorrow, gotta rake the 2nd feild in the morning and then pull out the baler and the hay racks, try to get them ready for the season again.... I thought we'd have enough lumber around to build another rack (have a set of 18' and 16' stringers laying around) but turns out it was all junk. The little bit we do have around is untreated pine so it wouldn't be any good in the elements year-round. OOPS! Looks like we'll have to buy some lumber and I'll have to try and get one or both put together before the rest of the 1st crop comes off, here's hoping!!

Today I spent about 7-8 hours in the sun planting pumpkins with my (GRRR) brother who is definately NOT a farmer anymore, but enough about him for now. I got burnt on my lower back where my dad failed to get the sun screen on and my left shoulder where I neglected, so I'm a little sore. To top it all off, they're calling for 91 degrees tomorrow!!!! Great day to bale hay- NOT! O well, I guess I'll have to deal with it on the flat rack.

You know what they say - Say NO to crack - Ha-Ha . That's the last place ya want a sunburn ! BTDT ! too many times . The chest hairs are to grey anymore to work without a shirt on so I don't get to many sunburns now . Their saying about 95 here today but I'm all cosy in the living room at 65 .

I have a hard time throwing bales up since I've had a dislocated shoulder or something for the last 5 months . I've dislocated it a couple times before so theres not much left of it . The right shoulder just always hurts like the dickens and is making the right side of my neck real painful also . But what doesn't kill you just makes you stronger . That's just part of getting older I guess . If I'd a thought I was gonna live this long I'd a taken better care of myself . NOT !

What's that new job about tomorrow ? Those Olli balls looked good ! Are you a working machinist ? Take care in the sun - a burn on a burn hurts twice as bad . ...Randy

I feel your pain regarding the baler-friendly corners. I still struggle with that, too.

Yep , still trying to figure that one out ! I used the rake on the tph drawbar this time so I could lift it over when needed and it worked a tiney bit better . If I got to much balled up I could raise the rake and skim the top off and spread it out again . I did that in the lower corner and just ran the baler through it with out it being windrowed and it was still almost to much for the baler . The rain washed a lot of my seed into that corner and the stand there is AWESOME . I wish the rest of the field was like it . But it's only about a 200 square foot patch . I only have that problem in two out of 5 corners in my field . As for the "auto -pilot " all I could see was two legs going under that 18.4 - 34 tire filled with calcium . I was tired and overhot so that didn't last long . Take care ...Randy

I got ours bales to, I mowed it yesterday, my wife raked it this afternoon and I baled it tonight...all 20 bales ( from about 5 acres ).

I think I need a soil test and some fertilizer. A bit more rain would have helped. I had cattle on this pasture up to a month ago, I probably should have pulled them off sooner. Hopefully I will get a bit more next cutting ( if we ever get some rain ).

Tim, that doesn't seem worth the price of fuel to mess with. Where are you located, Texas? Makes my field look good. Sure hope you get more rain so you can enjoy your haying time alittle longer next time.

We are 30 miles ne of kansas city, missouri. I am going to do a soil test and see what needs to be done, also some rain would help, I have cracks in the pasture in the ground I could stick a finger in....
