I just came in from cutting hay with a 479 I just bought this winter. It was constantly clogging. I'd back up, move forward and it would cut good for awhile. Several of the sickle blades feel dull. I think I might try to replace some of the blades. Is it best done on the machine or is it easier to slide the entire thing out the side by
the wobblebox?

It's much easier to fill a sickle if you remove it from the machine. That way you can sit it on an anvil when riveting in the new sections, you might as well replace all the sections. i think there's about 36 or so plus a special double section on the end. use serrated sections not smooth. once you remove the sickle inspect the guards to make sure the ledger suface (that corner of the guard that the section rubs across)is good and square almost sharp. if this surface is rounded it won't shear the hay. like having a pair of sissors with only one side sharp. if this is the case you will have to replace the guard. A set of guards properly alligned usually runs me about 400 acres. once you reinstall the sickle make sure it contacts all the guards the same. some the guards may be bent upward and will need to bent back down. good luck, be careful not to cut yourself.

Its easier to replace knife sections with the small bolts rather than rivets. If a knife section fastened with bolts breaks, you can replace it with the blade still no the machine.
