Selecting the correct baler

I'm trying to find a used round baler. I need to find one that will work with a 40hp tractor. Other than posting on the forums here or contacting the local dealers is there any good way to find out what balers will work.

Currently we have someone do the baling for us. The catch is there are only 2 people locally we can get to do this. We cut and rake ang they bale. Both fit us in amongst their own bailing and have been doing so for decades.

We are not a large enough operation to justify running out and upgrading the tractor. I just want to keep my eyes out in the trading post and dispersal auctions and see if a deal that is too good to pass up happens.

Vermeer would be my first choice also but they don't seem to be popular around here. You mostly see New Holland with the occasional John Deere thrown in.

Any suggestions on older models? The manufacturers don't list the specs for the old models on their web sites.

If you want a round baler for a 40 HP tractor the Vermeer Rebel 5400 is the one. It will make 4x5 bales and pull gears faster that the off-colored paint. The bale will weigh more and you will be in your easy chair while the other MFG's are wasting fuel. You can do this for $$$ thousands less and it MADE IN THE USA. After Vermeer invented the large round baler. And yes the Rebel 5400 will bale haylage.

The only suggestion I can make would be that you find a variable chamber baler, that makes a 4' wide bale. With the variable diameter chamber, you can tie the bale off and spit it out when you start running out of power. With a 40 hp tractor, you really don't have power enough to effeciently run any kind of round baler, but you could get by on fairly level ground, and probably make a 3-3.5' bale. Really, if you want to run a 4x4 round baler efficiently, you need 60 PTO hp. Personally, I think Claas makes the best baler on the market, but they're fixed chamber balers, and your tractor simply doesn't have the nads to turn it full. I'm sure if you look around you would find a good machine from NH, Deere, or Vermeer. There's also some Gehl's, Hesstons, Case/IH and Masseey's out there that would do.... I won't get into models, because if you read any of my previous postings on this subject.... well I'm a diehard Claas fan. HTH.
