Hi, I pulled my NH 256 rake gear box apart becuase it was skipping teeth when you turn it over by hand. I found that the shaft & pinion ($152.78) looked worn. The other gear, bevel ($136.90) has wear but doesn"t look to bad. Also the bearing on the pinion had the cage broke and rollers fell out. Normally due you replace both gears or just the pinion & shaft. Thanks, Bill

The bad bearing would be enough for the gears to slip occasionally. Fix that first and try it in the field. Likely enough to fix the problem. You didn't mention any gears were chipped. Wear could be adjusted for with shims.

Don't know how much you use the rake but I had the same problem and only replaced brgs and races. Everything has been working fine since.
