I have three acres to lime and fertilize and an MF 275. I am considering the purchase of a USED 300-500# steel spreader.

What components should I inspect to insure a usable product after the sale?

What you need is a drop spreader for the lime, not a broadcaster. Surely ag lime can be had in Florida. You can buy bagged pulverized lime for about $2.75 a hundred here give or take a dime. It works quick but doesn't last. Crushed ag lime should stay with you for 5 years....because it dissolves slower. Call an equipment place and ask about a drop spreader..they might have one. Have you got a Southern States feed Co-Op there? Check the phone book. Ours has most everything...including spreaders...you buy enough lime, they loan the spreader, otherwise a small charge applies.

Odd no service in your area. Had 22 tons installed on my farm in PA, it came to about $35 ton installed. Plus I didn't get white shoes. Good luck.

I called the Agricultural Extension Agent's Office. They did not know anyone that supported this activity. That seemed odd - they suggested that I call the Feed and Seed stores. We must be best at "cultivating" Tourists here in Florida.

The provider of the lime generally has hopper bins you can use or rent. They fill it up and you drive home with it.

Once home unhook from truck and hook up tractor, adjust the feed rate and drive thru the field.

This would be better than buying a piece of equipment that will sit idle more than it is used.

Nice implement!

I agree. Purchasing one of these would would be an expensive and wrong decision. I have not located anyone that supports this activity in my area. What I had in mind was the broadcast type.

If your looking at a hopper type broadcast spreader, they wont work with Ag lime. It will bridge and not flow through it. You would have to use bagged granular or pelletized lime and that gets expensive. IMHO!

The implement I had in mind for each of lime, fertilizer and seed is not too expensive ($395.00 new) but granular lime locally is $5.75/40# bag with no price break for a ton.

I want to spread 400#/acre over 5 acres (50 bags = $287.50). I've got to agree this appears to be an expensive proposition for purchase and application of lime.

Does granular lime produce results as well as powdered lime?
