i am having trouble with my sickle mower yet, hanging hay on the outer end of the bar. someone said use a 1/2 knife on the end but cant find one. can find a knife and a 1/2 but dont have an extra hole for this. i'm suppose to have 28 knives and that is what i have. any suggestions on why it would do this? i put a new sickle in, the entire thing and it seemed to be better for awhile but know it's back to the same thing.

The sickle bar needs the last blade replaced with a single blade that is made up of a blade and a half. Until that is done, you will have problems with hay piling up on the outer point. Make sure that everything out on the end of the sickle bar is tight, hammer tight. All of my sickles have the special blade on the end, for that reason. The swathboard is on the outside of the outer foot. Its purpose is to fold the hay over, so that the next time around the inter shoe will have a clear space to run. Watch your speed and the fall of the hay. If the hay still stands for an instant after you go by, then you are traveling too fast. A sickle mower is not a fast machine, don't compare its speed to the disc mower. It is much slower. Word of CAUTION, all ways use your palm of your hand to handle the sickle when raising or lowering, never use your fingers....
Good Luck..... .

Is the outer shoe set up for the little strap that is adjustable down close over the knife, to keep debris from building up there?

It's Key # 16 at this link? (The link is to parts for 350 and 450 mowers, but the parts I've mentioned will fit others, too.)

Do you have a good ledger plate in the outer shoe, and is the outer shoe shimmed correctly, with the ledger plate close to the sickle? (Shims are Key # 24.)

Gary, I'm at work right now, so I can't look at my #5 but if I remember right the section and a half only has 2 holes. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that. You also may want to make sure that the sickle travels all the way to the end of the bar, do this with the bar down and turn by hand. I've actually been sold the wrong pitman stick before(too short)and took it for granted that it couldn't be my problem. The sickle would plug up on both ends.
Make sure your bar has a little lead, the tip of the bar should be slightly ahead of mower.
The board on the end of the bar is kind of hard to describe, some are metal some are wood, go to implement photos and type in "5 mower" there's a picture of a grass board on a mower with a tractor that should help.
The best thing is to find a manual, you may still be able to get them from JD.
Hope this helps.

Gary; if your hay is hanging up on the
out side end? you need what is called a
divider board, bolts to end of cutter bar
when cut hay falls on the board it sorta
flips it back away from uncut hay.Leave
your sickle and sections alone, they are alright Ken

The presence of, or lack of, a divider board, grass board, swath board, whatever it might be called, has no impact on how well the grass is being cut by the far end of the sickle. It's purpose is to clear a path of hay to eliminate plugging at the near end of the sickle on the next round. Plugging at the fasr end is usually fixed by using a one-piece section and a half, held on with two rivets.

I am not thinking that that is the problem here. The grass board flips the end foot or so of hay over so the inner shoe has a place to ride on the next pass. It flips the hay AFTER it clears the bar. If hay is hanging on that outer end of the bar I have to think it is not cutting cleanly, is getting caught in there and being ripped off the plant. I would look closely at exactly where the hay is accumulating and see if there is a problem there. Make sure you raise your bar before going over already cut hay as it can get hung up on bar.
I just walked out and looked at one of my mowers. Looks like there is adjustments for that end of knife. The outer shoe pretty much always carries SOME hay is my memory. Guess I am not understanding exactly what is happening with yours. MOST of the hay should fall backwards and be left behind. If it is not then there must be an issue with the cutting action. Missing tooth, broken tooth, dull tooth, poor knife adjustment.
Just some (rambling) thoughts, HTH.
