whats the difference between an under and over serrated sickle section? i got smooth figured out. my local tsc store has an under serrated i was thinking about getting for my no. 5 mower.

The ddifference is the serrations are either on the topside or the underside. The top serrated are selfsharpening and are a very aggressive section that works well in coarse crops. the underserrated can be resharpened and work well in grass hay. Smooth sections need to be sharpend daily and almost nobody uses them anymore.

Never heard of an over-serrated section. All we ever sold were smooth and US. Smooth for mowing green stuff like clover, and US for dry stuff like stubble. Sections for combines were always US.
