I have a New Holland 268 baler and would like to know if these balers will accept plastic twine. I"m using sisal at the moment and am not very happy with it. I"m having alot of breakage with the twine but not at the knots. It"s apparent that the quality of the twine that I have is poor. What would you recommend??? Thanks in advance.

The three main reasons I no longer use sisal.

1. Moisture, from high humidity to frost, it sucks it up like a sponge. Usually happens to the bottom of the ball in the holder. Makes a weak spot as it is pulled out. Hence, if breaking try a new ball.

2. Time, related to moisture, it just breaks down over time. Can't count the times I have put in a new ball just to finish and then replace it the next spring because of problems.

3. Mice, not related to moisture or time, but the mice eat the stuff up.

There is no reason I know of that any Ford, NH, or JD knotter should not be able to handle plastic. You will have to adjust them a tad and keep the twine knifes sharp, but it should work. Plastic eliminates these problems and my bale breakage is down to a few per thousand (50's Ford 250 series baler). If I do get a bad run it is usually the baler that needs work. Plus I say just what I say to the boy who complaints about plastic, "If you don't throw it on the ground, you won't have to pick it up later."

My 268 does fine with sisal from TSC - made in Brazil, no less. We shy away from plastics because they don"t diodegrade, and are a nasty thing to deal with in our animal"s hair (wool).

I baled with a NH 268 for 3-4 years, (until the feeder assembly blew up,) and always ran plastic twine. The billhooks on 268 NH balers can go either plastic or sisal twine. Check the owners manual. With any twine, it's all about tensile strength. Go to the NH dealer and get their plastic twine, not from your friendly farm supply store. The plastic twine I purchased from TSC will come apart when 'ya throw the bale, again, tensile strength. By the way, I have a NH 268 for parts if you are interested. I just bought a NH 315 thats been through the shop. Happy baling!

Thanks for the offer on parts. I'll definitely keep it in mind. The sisal I have is deinitely poor quality and I might be over rating it. It came from TSC so lesson learned there. There's times I can pull on it by hand when I'm trying to retie a bale and it will break. Another headache I'm dealing with right now is "banana bales". I used a 268 when I was a kid and don't remember not being able to keep it adjusted. One side is always looser than the other, some worse than others with grass hay. My next cutting will be clover so we'll see what happens then. Thanks to everyone for all of their input.

Usually twine breakage is caused by bad adjustments somewhere. You may be packing the bales too tight or you have just a poor quality twine. Try Green Valley twine and check your bale weights and let up on the tension a bit. Plastic is a pain and most buyers don't like it because it never goes away.
Good luck regardless of how you go.
