To all the hay experts...Is there a formula to determine yields of hay per acre? I understand that weather and location have a lot to do with it. Small farm located in south central Kentucky. Looking to plant a timothy alfalfa mix and bail small squares. Thanks for your input.

Way too many variables to come up with a formula, type of hay, moisture, soil can all have a major impact withing the same county. No substitute for just plain old ground truthing. Figure out the number of bales divided by the acreage of the field gives you bales per acre, then convert bales per acre to tons per acre by taking some weights of bales, get a scale you stand on, then grab a bale of hay and weight you and the bale, subtract you weight and you get bale weight, do this for about 20 bales and you should be all set. If you have 40 lb. bales, and 100 bales per acre, then you have a yield of 2 tons/acre. On a lot of my first cut stands I average around 2.5 - 3 tons/acre.

Pete, I expect you'll find that an acre may be slightly larger in IN than in PA.....Heh...

Bring your tape measure or laser range finder and come on over..... 5.62 tons for mainly alfalfa...that is not extraordinary.....

I am in North Central Indiana. 90% alfalfa 10% timothy. got 180 62.5 lb bales last year. It was a dry year. Hoping for better this year....

Have ten acres mixed hay on farm in PA, Climax Timothy, Orchard Grass, Clover, always hope for 100 bales acre. Too many variables to be exact.
