Hello Rod , and any other CLAAS baler owners. Rod , I think I found a good one. 1999 46 RC, with about 9000-10,000 bales. In reasonable shape, some cosmetic dings. One of the feed merging augers on the side of the pickup is bent a little, hope it won't be a problem. Auto-tie,hydralic lift on the pick-up, and the roto-cut unit. I guessed who the prior owner was and called him up for some history. Checks out good. He milks 200 plus cows, and keeps two of everything. Dealers love him, as he trades very regularly. Question; When the bale forms in a fixed chamber baler, does it just keep folding in on itself, and then get compacted by the outer layers, same as my soft-core baler now? Or does it go more like the variable core balers, round and round? Havn't bought yet, but sure am taking a second, hard look. Thanks, Kent.

Hi Rod. The rollers appeared to be good. Auto chain oilers all in place and working. Hyd. hoses looked good,no damage. Won"t know for sure until it is powered up. I trust the former owner. He is a pretty straight shooter. I am a little concerned about parts support. I am told that Fort Equipment is going to be the only dealer for Maritimes. Do you know what they are like? Pretty wet here. The St. John is high. Kent.

Huuh. Fort eh? I haven't dealt much with them. The last contact I had with them was last fall. I was looking for some parts for an old IH combine. They weren't particulairly enthusiastic about that... but nobody is when it comes to a 615... They all say OH, one of them? So I dunno. They might be OK with newer stuff.
For the most part, I haven't had a lot of trouble with my 44S. The biggest thing I had to wait for was rollers, which wasn't too long. However, that was close to 10 years ago. We also bought them ahead, and had them when the failure happened. They were stone damaged, and we knew their ticket was up.... The only other stuff I've changed is pickup teeth, guards, pickup bearings, and the cam follower bearings. Any bearing on the machine can be gotten through Coastal or Kinecor. The other stuff I keep on hand. Actually, I did a major overhaul of the pickup, and I just keep some old guards around, and always some new teeth. Otherwise, I wouldn't expect much to wear out or break. The only real failures I've had were pickup bearings, due to hay wrapping on the shaft and cooking the bearing. Keep the chain oilers up and working too, and if you do need to change chain, get the best quality 60H, 80H or 100H if it has 100. Always get the heavy side link chain. Regular chain doesn't stand up, and chinese chain is eaten before breakfast. Best of luck.

Rod

Thanks for the info. That was exactly what I wanted to hear. The previous owner had changed the bearings on the cams, and said to have them checked. I was worried that all those bearings might be a dealer only thing. Talk to ya later. Kent.

Hi Kent,

Due take note that the bearings are metric. Mine has a lot of 30mm and 55 mm. They're all pretty common in terms of metric bearings. Just make sure that you give the counter dolt the full bearing number, and make sure that he understands that it's a permanently sealed bearing. Mabey I'm being a bit hard on bearing guys.... but I dealt with one down here that wouldn't get the right fricken bearing if I gave him the number off the box (I'm not exagerating... but I won't go on...). As I said before, the only bearings I've had go bad were the pickup bearings and the cam follower bearings. I've replaced bearings in the rollers when the rollers were replaced, but never had a failure, knock on wood. Take care.

Hi Kent,

Yep, you got the idea. The bale just starts to tumble like a snowball, and gets bigger and bigger. It starts to roll, and then compresses once it fills the chamber. I think that baler has the top 3 rollers on a hinge, which drops into the chamber. Newer style than my old pelter. This increases the compression, and starts the bale rolling sooner. Good feature as I understand it. My only other suggestions are to watch that the rollers aren't all dented in or banged up, as the roller skins are structural, and any dings do weaken them. Also be sure that the hydraulic system is up to snuff, especially on the door, because it needs to be tight to build the bale to pressure. Otherwise, I say go for it.
