Allan,

I'm not sure what part of Nebraska you're in, but do you know anything about Sandhill Cranes? We have some here in Florida and I tell visitors who ask that they're "Florida Woodpeckers".

We have a set of Sandhill Crane adults who live near us. Their job seems to be patrolling the edge of a retention pond in our neighborhood, poking their bills into the sand and digging out grubs of some kind. They have raised a handsome pair of chicks this spring, and I've never seen anything grow so fast in my life.

If I could figure out a way to pen them up, and develop a market for their meat, I'd be rich! I surely wouldn't do that, but they've been so much fun to watch this spring.

We have some nesting on my farm in Southern Michigan. Sometimes they get pretty tame and come right up to the house.

Yep, they do get tame, almost to the point that they don't worry enough about traffic, etc.

We have them pass through too in the fall and spring not staying but there are federal and state wildlife refuges for them along their route. One migratory bird refuge south of here about 70 miles or so south of Muleshoe TX in the sand hills by some salt flat lakes. I suppose those lakes may have been dry this spring and didn't see as many migrate back through this spring our way.

Thanks for the reply. I hope the migrating birds are not too much of a nuisance. I've heard that they make a lot of noise sometimes. Our pair of parents get a little rowdy at my dog sometimes.

I had one once. Bought it used from a JD dealer in Belle Fouche, SD. Didn't work well though so I sold it to a guy in Florida. Could be thats the one you have diggin up grubs.....Don't know if mine was from Siberia though..... ...

They migrate through every spring for about a month on their way to Siberia or somewhere to nest. The only thing I know is when they leave it is time to fix fence and plant. The oldtimers used to eat them.

And, don't forget us farmers up river are required to give them a certain amount of our irrigation water every year. Thats about all I know about them.
