Last year I was the one to cut early ( may 31 ) yet some people in the area are cutting now and the part of the field that I didn't turn under last year has the grass heading out but the alfalfa isn't even budding yet and it's 24" tall as measured yesterday . It's all a little pale looking but not bad . It needs nitrogen I'm pretty sure but I didn't have a chance to get to the co-op to get a soil test kit like I wanted to . The new seeding is slow but it's up to about 8-10" now so I'm going to cut it also so I can get the fertilizer down on the whole field . Since I have a off the farm job I might cut tomorrow and hope the rain that's in the forcast for Wednesday doesn't happen . I have Friday off so maybe it'd be ready to bale then or Saturday . The temp is supposed to go back down into the upper 60's for the week . Anyone else out there making hay yet here in Iowa or anywhere ? Take care ...Randy

We got 10.5" to 15" in a 7-8 day period here, stopping a little over a week ago. Our farm is on a hill with other steep slopes rising out of our meadows to the West and North. We had over 5 feet of water in some low lying areas of the sheep pasture behind the barn, and standing water on the majority of out hay fields. A 30 acre field that I hay on the Souhegan River here in Southern NH had over 6 feet of moving water on the part closest to the river. We had just fertilized it ont he 28th of April. Guess we won't be haying for a while at best.

finished baling 6 acres mixed grass on Sat. got 8 ton of the field. Baled with an AC square baler. Looks like it's growing again. Located east of Springfield MO

Have finished 6 acres mixed grass hay Saturday ,5-20. Got about 8 ton of off it. Square bales put through AC baler. Near Springfield MO.

Randy, i was just out at my dad"s place looking at my hay this morning, i have at least another week before I"m ready to mow. This coming week they"re talking chance of rain everyday till thursday, be nice if we"d get some warm sunny weather to speed things along. I put some potash on this spring, and I might put some nitrogen on after my first cutting to help the mostly grass mix I have now. I made a delivery near New Virinia last week and i saw a couple fields allready mowed. I"ve missed the smell of hay drying.

I was going to call you last weekend when I was up in Allison, but my cousin"s freezer broke down so we had to do ALOT of cooking. Didn"t have a lot of luck on the job front, although I have seen the housing is alot cheaper than down here near Des Moines. I guess I"m just gonna have to get back up there and do some more looking and talking.

Hi Rich , Hey , I eat too ! Ha-HA I wasn't here all the time like I thought I was gonna be anyway . I'm going to cut at least some of the hay tomorrow if I get home from work early enough and it's not raining . It's rained off and on here for the last couple of hours but nothing very hard . Not really enough to settle the dust .

I'm going to put nitogen on in a week or two . I put a fair amount of Potash and phosphorus on last fall so I won't put any more on till I get another soil test . I should be able to get the bags Friday since I get a 4 day weekend . I may wait on the nitrogen till the test results are back , I haven't decided yet .

I don't know much about the job market over that way . But you are right about the housing . It's realitively inexpensive around here . There are acreages popping up all over for sale so there may be some for rent also . The price of fuel might be causing this . All the yuppies that wanted to live in the country found out it cost's to much to commute to Waterloo to work . Which side of Allison are you visiting ? Take care ...Randy

We cut 35 acres on Thursday, May 19 and are just waiting for the clouds to clear in Boone County. We try to get the first cutting started before Memorial Day at our farm so we can attempt four cuttings of hay.

Here in Ohio it is figured to start cutting Alfalfa the 15th of May and every 30 days thereafter and alfalfa you do not want in bud, starts to loose feed value and you do not put nitrogen on any legume, adding nitrogen inhibbits its ability to produce the nitrogen that it will make and leave in the ground for your next corn crop. Now red clover that we used to raise for hay you cut just as soon as it came into full bloom and that you did not put nitrogen on either the same as soybeans you do not put nitrogen on

Hi Leroy , I have a very small stand so I can cut it all when it's in it's relative prime . I don't rotate because I don't have enough acres to plant corn on in my estimation . Six acres or corn is a waste of time as far as I can see . Unless it's sweet corn but that's to labor intensive for the time I have to devote to it . No , it's grass hay for the duation as long as I own it anyway . I don't think my neighbors harvesting equipment would be able to turn around at the end of the field anyway ! HA-HA . And like I told Bob down below , I don't much care if the alfalfa does good or not , I was mistaken about planting it since I didn't consult my wife about it and the hay is for her horses . ( 3 Arabians , a apaloosa(sp?) and a mustang ) and she doesn't want it . And everyone around here grows alfalfa so the market for it is low . I want to dump the nitogen to it and get the grass to crowd it out . It looks good though and I'm almost happy with that part of the field where it's the thickest . Alfalfa looks good growing thick and tall . Take care ...Randy

We started cutting alfalfa last week. This week things will start getting a little hectic, with our own hay and custom baling.. Calling for 90 by the end of the week...Jim

Hi Jim , Are you close to RickL ? Or are you farther north ? We are about a week behind you in temps . It's supposed to stay in the 60's to low 70's for the week here with rain on Wednesday as of 10pm news last night . And you know that Joe is NEVER wrong ! HE-HE ! I didn't see any mention of 90's . That I'm not looking forward to ! I hate hot weather even if it is good for the crops . I moved up here from St. Louis to get away from the hot weather but I didn't go far enough north I'm finding out ! At least it's only hot ( 90* + )for a short time here instead of for 3-4 months in a row like it was down there . Take care ...Randy

I am south of RickL, have never met him but I think I know where he is.. I am about as far south and east as you can get in Ioway...weather man has been calling for rain for a week now, been cloudy off and on but no rain to speak of yet, maybe another dry summer with a hay shortage beginning to wish I had put in that other 36 acres of alfalfa I was going too..oh well we will have to wait and see....Jim

Hey Jim,

Same way here. A week ago, I was sure we were going to see 100 ton this year.

If it doesn't rain within just the next few days, I'll be lucky to be able to feed those three horses this winter. Dried up in a hurry. :>(

Randy, if you've got a good bit of alfalfa in that field with the grass it doesn't need nitrogen. It may well need something else but not nitrogen. Read up on alfalfa....Good Luck...

Hi Bob , Yep I know . From what I've read -if I've read it right - some N won't hurt it a bit as long as the P and K are up there with a little boron . The alfalfa isn't evenly distributed throughout the field because of they way it was planted . Besides I'm not that concerned about the alfalfa . My wifes horses don't need it and she doesn't really want them to have too much of it . Too much bloat potential . So it's the grass that I'm looking out for . Take care ...Randy

I have all the equipment hooked up to the 4 tractors I use but the weather man keeps saying rain so I'm not cutting till I have a 5 day window to do it in. Was going to start cutting monday but the weather man is now calling for rain monday and wedsday and thurs day so I'll hold off a little longer

Hi Old , Do you cut for quantity or rfv ? I cut for my wifes horses so I'm trying for a higher rfv . I don't sell any so I just get what I get . Rained on early cut alfalfa is still better in rfv than late cut with no rain . I proved that to myself this last winter . My first cutting got rained on and baled to wet . Yet the horses put on weight over the winter with 3/4 of a bale each per day according to my wife ( I don't like horses ) . The hay we bought that was put up with no rain and was great looking hay caused our horses to loose some over the last couple of months since ours ran out . They got a bale each of that . No alfalfa in it though . But more clover it looked like . For what it's worth ...Randy

I cut for myself and the horses and goats we have. I don't have any alfafa and can't grow the stuff in this part of Missouri tried a few years ago but little if any ever came up so I gave up on it. I do have a good bit of clover. I try to get it cut as early as I can but in this area that means the first of June in most years. That why all the equipment is set up right now so as soon as I can I'll be out cutting. We got another heavy rain last night so its going to be a few more days yet before I can even think about cutting

Hi Old , OK , I'll bite - what's the fourth tractor for ? You don't bale on the ground do you ? I think my baler is ready but I still need to get some straw to prime it with and make sure . I changed the oil to 85w140 . It's the best wally world could offer . And I got the belly pump out of the Farmall M . I got a major leak out of the input shaft seal and the counter shaft seal so I might as well go ahead and tear apart the transmission and renew all the bearings and seals over the summer . I'll take it to the shop at work for that if the owner say's it's OK . Not a good idea to to open something like that up outside in my opinion . I still want to use it to rake though . It needs a LOT of help . I got a bad one . But that's what happens when you buy something off Ebay . The engine runs real good but that's it . And it has the M&W 9-speed which I like . Well I cut the hay with and Oliver 77 pulling a NH 460 MOCO, I rake with an Allis C and I have the square baler hooked up to an Allis WD and the NH 850 baler hooked up to an Oliver Super 88. And yes we drop the square bales on the ground. I do 99% of the haying by my self so I have no other choice. I also have a few tractors, mowers, and a rake as back ups for the ones I use most of the time
