Looks like I've got a leaky seal on the inner side of the gearbox. Anybody ever done this job? Can it be done with the gearbox in place?
Hope always springs eternal...

Well, it's leaking bad enough to leave a good size oil spot on the ground overnightafter I cut a 10 ac field. Pulling off that cover and resealing it every time to check lube is a royal pain. It just started leaking bad at the end of last season, so I'm not sure how much she's actually losing yet.
The corn head lube sounds like it's worth a shot. I want to explore all options before I tear the gearbox out, especially since we're just starting the season around these parts.
Thanks for the tips.

Farmer,

You don't have to pull that cover to check or to add oil.

The 5/16" bolt that holds the shield (on the left side and just forward of the shaft retainer plate) is the check bolt. It goes all the way thru unto the chamber.

Also, I'd make sure the vent is open. If it is building up pressure, it will force oil out past the seal.

If it is not leaking a lot, I would do what Allan said and add oil. If you do change the seal I would change the belt also since you have to remove, well, loosen the gearbox anyway to change the belt.

Farmer,

Mine is leaking a bit too, but I'm just gonna check the level from time to time for this year.

Takes one heck of a big leak for that 80/90 to completely empty. :>)

You have to remove the box. Not to bad a job with a cherry picker or hoist. If it is made like my 479 hardest part the bearing under hood.
