Hello,
I am new to the hay production. I have about 5-7 acres of fescue that I would like to bale and also 10 acres of wheat. I would like any advice on rakes and tedders. Do I need both and what is the difference between the two. I have not purchased a baler yet but I am looking at a square baler for the wheat straw and a round baler for the fescue. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Devin

Look around. I've found good rakes at auction for less than $50. I've even seen good used square balers for less than $100. Sickle mowers can be found for less than $100 also. I spent a total of $175 for mower (Case model 10), baler (NH 273) and rake (IH). I even found running gear for a hayrack for free! I'm in the process of building a platform on it. You don't need new or fancy equipment, just well maintained. If you are mechanically inclined, you can find what other's think is junk and resurect it. Just take your time, and you'll find some good stuff.

Yep,

That's my creed. Buy stuff that no one else would take to a dog fight.

Fix 'er up and use it. :>)

Thanks for the advice... I would like to do this and will continue for years.I am just trying to make a little income on the farm. I have other crops that I grow also. Maybe i look into a square baler and a rake. I dont want anything that is new but good equipment that will last for awhile. I will probablly look into New Holland products. There are several dealers around my part of North Carolina.

If your luky you will brake even and thats about it. You at the very least need 3 pieces of equipment. A mower weather it be a sickle or MOCO a rake, side delievery type and a baler. Sickle mowers can be had for around $200-1500 used. Mocos $500-5000. Rakes $200-4000 depending on a lot of things and Balers from $100 for junk and up to $5000 for one that is very good

As Rusty says, figure you will need to spend $2000-10,000 on the equipment you need and then how much will it be used. Also upkeep gets to be a big thing and takes a lot of $$ to do. Hire it out and save your self the grief. But if you still want to do it get a MOCO and saw your self some time, a good rake and a baler. The tedder might be nice but I have done hay for 20 plus years with out one and don'e ever plan to own one.

if you are not 100% sure that you want to do this for years.. then I would hire it done.. becouse if you buy the stuff to put the hay up.. then next year want to get out.. you will never get your money back out.. not likely anyhow..
but if you plan on doing it for a few years.. I would find a NH baler and a NH rake. not sure on the tedders.. if you can find dry weather to bale you don't really need it.. I have not so far.. been baleing for 3 years.. Tim Shultz

2 balers and 2 rakes for 15 acres of hay? Nahh, I wouldn't get that excited. Can't you hire it put up?
