I posted on this before, the fella has a 1209 Moco, a 256 NH Rake with dolly wheels, and a 20 foot NH Conestoga hay wagon with wood back and sides. Wants $1650 for the Moco, $1500 for the wagon and $500 for the rake. I know what I think but was wondering what you all think. How much of this stuff is worth the price?

Dave: the moco and wagon are over priced. The NH 256 rake is a good price if in decent shape.

Well, you guys nailed that one in my opinion. The 256 rake is in nice shape with nearly all it's paint and good little ag tires on the drive wheels. The wagon is also a beauty but I have seen better for a lot less. The moco is sitting on two flats (ripped up tires) and the guy won't take a nickel less. I am thinking of going back on the rake. The rest sits where it is in the tall weeds going to heck in a hurry. Guy just shrugs and swears he doesn't care if it sells or not. I'll never understand people I guess.

I will. If I buy it I might turn around and sell my NH 56. Not pretty but it does a good job. He has a couple of other items over there I forgot to ask him about. I'll talk to him next week. He is hard to get a hold of and may change his mind on the sale at any moment. It was his fathers equipment and he seems to have an emotional attachment to it. I can understand the tractor, but a hay rake??? :-)

Dave: I first became exposed to New Holland hay and forage equipment around 1960. Up until that time we had no local dealer, the nearest one was 120 miles away. My dad said it had to be good equipment as two of the most frugal farmers in our area had New Holland balers and rakes, and they paid more money for them than the rest of us were paying for IH, Cockshutt or Massey.

About that same time my cousin and her husband acquired a New Holland dealership. The first item he dropped off for us to try was an S-69 baler, it stayed. Within 10 years we had complete line up of New Holland haying and silage equipment plus a manure spreader.

In that era New Holland were light years ahead of most manufacturers of haying and silage equipment. We only had one disappointment, that being a semi-mounted 7' mower, if I recall correctly model 450 or 451. In those days New Holland were also doing a much better job of writing manuals. In my lifetime I've owned IH, NH, MF, Case, JD and Cockshutt farm equipment. I would have to say the highest level of satisfaction came from NH of 1960s and 70s vintage, and they had by far the best manuals.

I think they have slipped in the past 20 years, I know for certain their manuals have.

I recently purchased an old NH 450 sickle mower. It seems to work ok, but this is my first exposure to sickle mowers so I have nothing to compare it to.

Much of the linkage is home made and I am pretty sure that the connection points for the lift cable have been moved and the linkage is not correct. Does anyone have a manual that shows the proper connections? I have a photo copy of the parts diagrams, but they are all exploded and parts appear to be missing from the drawings.

I would really appreciate scans of the pages covering the proper setup.

the 256 rakes usually bring $7-900 without the dolly wheel if they are anything at all. the other 2 items are way overpriced, based on the auctions i've seen.
