Hi , Late last August I disc'd up 4 acres of reasonable hay because of washouts . When I had it seeded in September the seed was put down with the fertilizer . After the soil test the FS coop suggested this mix - 0-0-60 at 350 lbs per acre and 18-46-0 at 120 lbs per acre . The soil test showed that my soil was seriously deficient in P and K . We agreed that I didn't need alot of top growth last fall and that I'd put down more N after the first cutting and another soil test . I haven't gotten the soil test yet , probably this weekend now that the rain has stopped . The problem is that if the grass mix ( no alfalfa ) doesn't start growing soon I won't get a first cutting till July . The other part of the field that I didn't disc up is mixed grass with alfalfa and didn't get any fertilizer . It's over knee high already and the new side is barely 8" high . It grew for about 2 months last fall and did real good but now what could be the problem ? The PH was right on according to the soil test . Did I put on to much P and K ? Or Should I have put down the N early this spring and split it up with another application after the first cutting ? Is it to close to the first cutting to put it down now ? And if I do put it down next week will it cause any problems with the horses ? With all the rain this spring I thought it would grow like the dickens . Thanks for any advice ...Randy

Here in my part of the world the grass hasn't grew that well yet. I am in Northern Pa. and the weather was warm early but dry. Now we have moisture and it is cool. My hay is about 6 inches shorter than where it should be this time of year.

Unless your dealer is going to pay for the fert test, i'd give it at least a year before i retested again. Until then, i wouldn't put on any more P/K, but depending on what's out there, maybe some N.

What is growing? If you've got alot of weeds, you might consider mowing.

Hi , Nope I pay but it's just 15 bucks and yup I got some weeds . Don't really know what they are , a medium size weed that grew with a white flower on top and has heart shaped leaves attached at the point of the heart , and what I think might be canadian thistle but since they don't have a chance to grow very tall and flower I'm not sure . Those are the ones that seem to just propagate them selves if you cut them and let them lie . There's not a lot of these but I love to pick up a bale with my bare hands and find some of those stickers , so much fun ! Thanks ...Randy

Me too,

I've got 30 acres that I planted last fall that has to be plowed up.

I'll never do that fall seeding thing again. Just doesn't work very well in this area.

Hi , I don't think it was the fall planting because we had OK rain last fall right after it was planted for a number of weeks and the temps didn't get that high or to low . It was growing good last fall . It came up good it's just growing real slow , and looks like it has rust on it , the disease . Not sure on that one either . It has rust colored streaks up the leaves I noticed tonight as I walked the field . Like everyone say's , time will tell . At least I can buy hay from my neighbor right out of the field so I might still get enough for the winter . Good luck with your's ! ...Randy

One reason its so short is it doesn't have a root system yet.

There are no roots to take in the nutriants.

Give it some time if you have a thick stand.

If your stand is thin like Allens was you might want to start over.

It is only about 3-4 months old in terms of the growing time it has had.

Hi , it's not as thick a stand as I had planned or hoped for but it's not bad . I think I'll dump some N on it to green it up some more and get some tops on it . I'll mow it next week with the rest of the field though to knock down what weeds there are . I mow pretty high ( 5-6 inches ) so it'll recover quick . sound OK ? Thanks ...Randy

This stuff ain't korn or soya-beenies...
You boys keep yer britches on... it'll come along in due time...
(Illinois talk for what IAGary just said!!)

I put N on after every cutting - not a lot - just enough to give it a "kick" in the britches... Makes big difference!!
