One more newbie question: what's the functional difference between smooth and notched discs. I assume the notched are somewhat more aggressive, but wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong.

Notched blades, due to a smaller ground contact area, will concentrate more weight on that smaller area, and are more effective in cutting. Supposed to be used for trash. That said, most discs I've seen, and every one I've used had notched on the front and solid on the back, with the exception of my offset, which has notched all around. HTH.

I think notched blade are like flames on a race car. It makes the disk look cool! I have both kinds of disks and to tell you the truth I can't tell much difference in the two. I think the weight of the disk and the angle of the blades makes the real differnce. I have one disk that weighs about 10,000 pounds with regular blades and it can cut most any sod or trash pretty well.

The notched blades will get some cut, no matter how hard the soil is. The notch on the blade will cut the soil and will tend to shatter the part that it skips. Notched blades are used for cutting trash where as the smooth blade will roll on top of the trash. The best buy is to have notched on front and smooth on the rear. I set my front gang to cut deep and then set the rear gang to cut shallow,thus giving a smooth run and a fluffed up soil.I have a MF disc which the rear gang flips up on top of the front gang thus adding more weight to the front gang. Sure works nice on new ground.

Hi , Another newbie here to a point . My Op's manual calls for notched blades in heavy trash and rocky soil . My disc has smooth blades and I'm not changing them for different conditions - $$$ ! For what it's worth ....Randy

Noched blades are for cutting the soil more. Smooth blades cut the soil finner. Usally you what a disc with noched in the front and smooth in the back.

Yep - supposed to chop up stuff better and not just roll over trash...
My old disc (a Burch) has the plain round disc blades so don"t have any experience with the notched blade system.

Who else can help leeinmass out here...?
