It is time to move up to the next level around here and I am thinking of retiring the JD5 mowers I have used for the past several years and taking on a mower conditioner. A JD 1209 has become available a couple of miles from home. Fella has not put a price on it yet and I have not seen it.
I have looked at a lot of haybines but the JD machines are new to me. Sure would appreciate any tips and advice relative to the JD machine and information about how to check it out, problem areas, etc. If anyone has a ballpark on a price range on these machines it would help me going in also. Has a 9' cut. Appreciate any input.

Dave,
I had a 1209 and it was a pretty decent machine. As Joe stated, check the wobble box and also the wobble box mounts (frame) as well.

Have you considered a discbine? If you have the extra $$ and horsepower, you will cut your mowing time dramatically over a haybine. I sold my 1209 and bought a used NH 408 Discbine a couple of years ago and I will never go back. Faster, cuts anything without plugging, less maintenance and is a joy to run.

Good luck,
Scott

I used to run 1209 and 1219 and then switched to a 489 NH, would never go back to a JD, the NH floats much better, crimped better and didn't eat guards and sections. Just an overall better machine.

If you are looking for a haybine look for a New Holland. There are many reasons NH sold 10 times as many haybines as JD. The 1207 & 1209 go for less than a $1,000 here at the auctions.

I have heard that the wobblebox on the 1209's had a tendency to go out. You might want to check it somehow....

Most 1209's I see are $1K - $2K.

I have a 1219 that I purchased at the beginning of last which is about the same only a little newer. Paid $1500 from JD dealer. Rollers were good but had to replace seals in upper and lower gear boxes. This one had the hydraulic ram which moves the toungue from transport to cutting which is nice. I"m very pleased with it now but have only cut about 30 to 40 acres with it so far. The main thing I tried to look for when I was buying one was the condition of the rollers since they are a very expensive replacement item.
