O.T. How long can grass hay lay with rain?

I cut what I thought was going to be a bumper crop of grass hay a week ago. The problem is it"s been raining ever since I cut it. It was very thick when I cut it so I teddered it right away. How long can it lay without be a total loss. Looks like rain thru the rest of the week. It"s a mix of fescue/orchard grass. My clover hay, which is almost waist deep, will be ready by mid next week. Hope I don"t run into the same problem.

You should never had tedded it. The best protection it has in cooler weather is that is stays in a windrow and protects it from the sun bleaching it out, that works until there are enough mold spores in the air and heat to bake it. Just wondering, you must not have seen the weather, the entire mid west has been a total wet mess for the last week. you could try to mulch up the rows with a rotary mower, once it is dry and brittle it breaks up easily and you hit the windrow about 3 or 4 times with a mower and mulch it up, easier than trying to bale it and figure out what to do with it.

It"s still raining here but it"s suppose to clear out after tomorrow. Surprisingly the cut grass is still pretty green so hopefully I"ll still be able to make some use of it. The new is already starting to pop thru. I only have a small square baler so round bales for me isn"t an option. I didn"t plan on selling any of it anyway but to use it for my horses and my daughters goats this winter. After the dismal hay crop I had last year I don"t want any of it to go to waste. Only time will tell. Thanks for all the replies!

Farmall, my advice would be to bale it to get it off the feed and burn it or you can be like some guys and sell that junk to people you don't know but word gets around you know. Its had to much rain already.....This time of year its hard to cut without getting a shower but thats a shower and you've had a lot of rain..... ...Better luck next cutting.

I've let hay lay a week and not seen any significant loss. Actually had new growth coming up through it. In my area thats better then letting it stand for another week. If it ends up laying longer then that I chop it back into the ground, apply urea and hope for better luck on the second crop.

When it turns yellow, its pretty well toast. If you can find a wrapper, wrap it ASAP if it isnt too far gone already. Catch it between showers, cut, ted it to get the water off, roll and wrap. Rain water makes slime if it ever dried out but if you still have stem moisture it can make good round bale silage. Every year I have to wrap some that never even gets to wilt.
