I have recently purchased a 43 Farmall H with a PTO but no three point nor hydraulics. I would like to use it for mowing construction lots. What is a source for a pull behind sickle mower or a pull behind brush hog. I think I would prefer the sickle type. Does anyone make these today or am I limited to the used market. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Dave,

I was just wondering if your 1943 Farmall H is sn. 137049. My dad bought this tractor new in '43 and I would like to locate this tractor.
My ph. is (607) 756-8213.

Thank you very much for your attention.

Roger

I would get a brushhog type. The sickle will be a pain when trying to mow around stuff, especially since its not 3pt mounted. Also, any little piece of metal or something hard sticking up will take a good notch out of a sickle section. And with most of those older seckles, you have to take the whole bar out to replace a section easily. You can replace them by taking off the guards and using a block under them when setting the rivet. But that can be a pain to do.

Another thing is that a sickle mower won't go through real thick, matted, heavy grass, It'll cut it, but the guards will get tangled and the bar will break away(like when you hit a large rock, stump, etc.)

One of the neighbors up home used a rig exactly like The Red sent a image of for mowing hay. Worked fine. If you're gonna mow lots where there will be debries, brush and so on be sure that the mower has a slip clutch. Most Deere mowers of that vintage did. Deere (and others)is pretty good about parts support.

If you did go the rotary route I think you would want to get an over-runing clutch for the PTO. Also, depending on rocks, debries and so on the rotary blades might eventually need more maintenance than a sickle bar would.

In used stuff, this is my Grandpa's 1941 Farmall H (which a neighbor owns and has NEGLECTED) with a JD #5 sickle bar mower attached. I have seen this type of mower for around $100 to $200. A lot were built so parts can be found. You can also get some new parts from Deere. The mower cuts pretty darn good.

So how much have you offered him to get that family treasure back?

He won't part with it. He and his brother had a feud going and he bought it out from under his brother's nose for $300 in 1983 from Grandpa. His brother is now in poor health. If he passes on, I suspect I will own it.

Thats the way I like to see these old girls,
I think they look good painted to, the only reason
I painted mine was to keep it from rusting, I'd rather buy that one than one just painted, around here they cover a lot of ugly with a little paint.
My neighbor a small case last spring after running it a couple days the body filler came off the block leaveing a 4 in crack. So to my that looks great. Jeff

Glad to see he got the gas safety cap.

(Case has a recall on them, send in your serial number & they will send you a free, VENTED gas cap.)

It only has the gas safety cap because I had an extra one and stuck it on there.

I know Bushhog still makes a trailer type bushhog and you can get a new sickle mower too. I would recommend the bushhog for construction lots and clean ups for a sickle mower will not stay together using it for clean up. The smallest piece of construction debris will totally tear up a sickle, a bushhog will keep going.
The price of a new sickle is too high. I priced a new 6' for hay cutting last year and it was $5400. They price them so high to make you buy a new disc bar cutter. They cost nearly the same price.
