I have about 20 acres of hay that I mow with sicyle mower. Have found a 489 haybine that farmer wants $1000 for. Haven"t seen it yet but he says bine is good working order. He used it last fall and plans on using it when it dries up around here in central Illinois unless he sells it first. He says it looks rough because he has to store it out side.
I need a better way to mow and condition hay but I don"t want to pay arm and leg for 20 acres of hay.
What is a fair price to pay and what should I check for when I go to look at the haybine?

Any help will be welcome.

Thanks guys!!!

I owned a 489 for about 5 years...used it to cut about 250 acres of hay every year. I would check the rolls out and also give the gearbox on the sickle a few turns to see if it is tight....489's have a bad reputation for having gearbox problems....however I still gave mine a good score over the years.

Saw one sell at auction for 450 Yesterday. Very rough shape. I paid 2000 for a 488 couple years ago in very nice shape stored in barn. I would look it over good and check the condition of the rolls. Beats cutting with a sickle any day been there done it. for what its worth.
