Sanity Check - NH 258 Gearbox Oil

I'm in the process of fixing a gearbox seal on a NH 258 rake. When I pulled the cover, there was water and brown "greasy" goo inside. I just want to make sure the factory recommended lube is 80w-90 gear oil and not grease. I'm almost postive that it should have gear oil, but I don't have a owners manual to verify.

In 1977, New Holland officially switched from gear oil to 2 tubes of grease gun grease. Steve (p.s. Actually, they told us one tube in 1977, but sometime around 1980 they upped the amount to 2 tubes.)

The original manuals called for gear oil but later
the company recommended gun grease. No rake gets
used when -20 degrees. We had good success doing
this to all rakes at the dealership. Chuck

Just did the same thing with mine. Had the same grey crap and water in it. NH dealer said it took gear grease. Its thicker than gear oil - not as thick as grease. Comes in a quart bottle with spout and you squeez it in.

I have a 258 and i always use gear oil and have had no problems in the many years that have run this rake.

I have used a lot those rakes and when I worked on the gear boxes, my local dealer always said to fill with a good grease and check it once awhile to make sure it was full. Hope this helps.

I am not sure about the 258 but, the 256 calls for grease. I thought it should have gear oil also. New Holland dealer says grease ONLY! I had my gearbox apart a while back and I drilled and tapped a hole for a grease fitting between the pinion bearings. Once I filled it with grease then I install the cover plate. Then every once in a while I give 1 or 2 shots of grease. That helps keep any water pushed out.
